Welcome to the cX Mafia Rules Page. cX Mafia (introduced to the site by the lovely and talented Scott A. Williams) is a game based upon other popular Mafia games. To learn more about Mafia in general, check out this site - reading through it will help teach you the ins and outs of Mafia in general, and could provide some concepts and gameplay tactics that are applicable to the cX Themed versions.

So far, cX Mafia has been Comic Book Themed, with "Heroes" taking the role of the "Town" and "Villains" taking the role of the Mafia. This instruction page only contains specific role information about already completed games - this is to allow ongoing Game Moderators to invent new roles and spring them on unexpecting players without warning. As unknown is so essential to a successful game, this page will try to preserve that. The instructions you find here will, however, teach you enough to play the game successfully. Just watch out for twists!

In future, details of the various game elements of different themes will be detailed here. To begin with, only specifics about the basic Heroes & Villains version will be featured here.

Glossary

Banish: To eliminate a player as a result of a Vote to Lynch

Faction: A group or a team within the game with a common victory condition.

Hero: A member of the Hero Faction

Lynch: The result of a successful vote during the Day Phase. The Lynched player is Banished.

Mason Group: A group of typically Heroes that meet at night, can communicate in secret, and know each other's Roles and Identities.

Night Ability: An ability one player has that can be used at night.

Roleclaiming: A public pronouncement by a player about their Identity, Role, or Ability. While not illegal, such a pronouncement is generally unreliable and is discouraged.

Sanity Issues: A modifier used to describe a player's Role. An Insane Detective's ability will not work properly, for example. Usually a player is initially unaware that their ability function's abnormally.

Villain: A member of the Villain Faction

Vote: Selection made by each player during the day phase, generally to choose a lynching victim.

Elimination

The Dead and the Banished do not speak. A particular Watcher may be lax on this rule, but a good guide is - if you are eliminated, don't post anything, and don't talk to players still in the game about what is happening. There will be plenty of time for discussion when the game ends.

Victory

The game ends when members of only one faction remain, or sometimes when a particular character has achieved their own personal victory conditions.

Overview

cX Mafia is played by a group of people, each playing the role of either a murderous Villain (Mafia), or a Noble Hero (Townsperson), along with a Watcher (Game Moderator).

The game is divided into Day and Night phases. During the Day phase, the Heroes try to root out the evil in their town by voting to lynch another player, hopefully to eliminate a Villain from the game, or at the very least gain information that will help them discover who is on what side. During the Night phase, the Villians communicate with one another (they know each other's identities), and select one victim to kill. The game alternates between Day and Night, until one faction is eliminated.

Cheating

If your role doesn't allow you to communicate outside the game, don't. Cheating ruins the game for everyone, and will not be tolorated. If you are caught cheating, you are subject to a 1 Week Ban from the site for a first offense. Plus, no one will want to play with you anymore. Is it worth it?

Roles

Each player is assigned a role at the beginning of the game. This will determine their faction, and any special abilities the character might have. In previous games, the following roles have been assigned.

Army Veteran The first night the Army Veteran is targeted, everyone who targets him is killed. After this he becomes a normal Townie.
Beloved Princess The death of this player results in the Town losing one Day (to mourn). Two consecutive Night Phases follow (one if the Princess is Night Killed).
Bodyguard Hero-For-Hire. Protects one player each night from a Night Kill
Bomb Explodes, killing the person who targeted them for a Night Kill, or the last person to vote to lynch them.
Commuter Player with the ability to leave town on non-consecutive nights, making all efforts to target him at night fail.
Danger Detector Variant of the Cop introduced in cX Mafia II: Secret Invasion. This role could investigate one player each night, and determine if they were "dangerous." This would return a positive on Villains, Skrulls (Cult variant), the Paranoid Gun Owner, Vigilante, and Serial Killer.
Detective Hero who can Investigate one player each night, to determine if they are Innocent (a Townie) or Guilty (Scum). The Godfather will return an Innocent verdict.
Doctor/Surgeon Player who can choose one player each night to protect. If that player is selected for a Night Kill, he escapes unharmed.
Godfather Leader of the Scum - coordinates communications between that faction, and submits the factions Night Kill selection to the Watcher. When the Godfather is eliminated from the game, his previously chosen successor (another Scum) will be assigned the role.
Governor The Governor can prevent a person from being lynched. Each day the Governor sends a name (or a list of possible names) to the moderator that he would like to save. If that person is up for a lynch, the Governor will prevent it.

The Governor can only save each player once per game.

Jester The Jester is self-aligned, and wins the game if he gets lynched.
Lie Detector Player can send one post each night to the Moderator. The Moderator will say whether or not the Player was being truthful in that post.
Mason Leader The Mason Leader recruits members into a faction of Townies who know each other's identities and roles, and can communicate at night. Only the Mason Leader can recruit new members, and if he is eliminated from the game, the Masons can no longer grow. If the Mason Leader targets a Scum for recruitment, the recruitment fails, and the Mason Leader is killed. Masons have been typically represented by a "Supergroup" of some kind in cX Mafia.
Naive Doctor/Protector Same as a Doctor, but their protection is totally worthless.
Paranoid Gun Owner Player who will kill any other player that targets them at night.
Psychiatrist Can select one player each night. If the Serial Killer is selected, the Psychiatrist "cures" them, and they become a normal Townie.

In some variations, if any other playeris selected, it is treated as if the Psychatrist is a Doctor.

Roleblocker Once each night, this player can select one other player to block. That player would be unable to use their Ability until the following night.

A variation used in cX Mafia II: Secret Invasion, Captain Cold would not only roleblock, but the targeted player would be frozen until the following Night, making them unable to communicate. This included posting, voting, and communicating with their faction (if applicable).

Savage Healer Introduced in cX Mafia II: Secret Invasion. The Savage Healer would survive the first attempt to kill or lynch. Afterwhich, they would revert to a Vanilla player.
Scum Generic Mafia - can vote during the day, and knows the identities and Roles all of the other Mafia. Can communicate with other Scum.
Serial Killer Self-Aligned player. The Serial Killer must select one player each Night to Kill. This Night Kill may not be skipped. The Serial Killer wins the game if they are the last player standing.

A Psychiatrist can cure the Serial Killer, making them a Townie.

Sidekick Introduced in cX Mafia II: Secret Invasion. The Sidekick could investigate one player each night, to determine if they were the Detective (in this case, Batman). Should the Detective be killed or lynched, the Sidekick would flee (effectively banished/lynched). In addition, the Detective would leave town for one Day upon the death or lynching of the Sidekick.

This role is a variant of the Lover role in a typical Mafia game.

Town Generic player, can only vote. Townies cannot communicate with one another outside of the game, and have no initial knowlege of any other player's roles. Typically the "good guys," Superheroes were used as the town until cX Mafia III, when the Villains were the town.
Tracker Selects one player each Night, to determine who (if anyone) that player targeted that Night Phase.
Vigilante Townie who can kill one player each night.
Watcher The Game Moderator. The Watcher sets reality, runs the games, and details what happens during the day and night. The Game Moderator is impartial, and everything he/she reveals to you will be the truth. (Note: The Watcher may not reveal aspects of your role to you, such as sanity. This is common, and key to the roles, and the only real exception.)

Variant Concepts

The above listed are just basic roles, but more advanced games bring many more concepts and abilities into play, including extra factions, insanity issues, incompetance, and even posting restrictions. You can be sure that future cX Mafia games will include other elements beyond the ones listed. To learn more about the other potential game elements that could be included, pay a visit to MafiaScum.net and read up on the game. Beware - these are not the only things that can be done in a game of Mafia - the Watcher might just invent new roles and rules to suit a theme!

Game Progression

Day Phase

During the Day, the Town debates on another player to Banish (effectively a kill). Of course, the Heroes generally want to kill a Villain, so the goal during this time is to try and figure out who are Heroes and who are Villains. The Villains participate in this discussion and vote as well, in an effort to obscure their identity or to implicate a Hero and get them lynched. The Day Phase will continue until a preset deadline time, or until the Watcher decides (for any reason) to advance the Day to Night. If the Town has accumulated enough votes to convict, the selected player will be Banished, and their role revealed to all.

To vote, you should do so in the following manner:

Vote: Player Name

To change your vote:

Unvote: Player Name
Vote: Player Name

Night Phase

During the Night, the Villains conspire, and decide who to kill. In addition, players with various Night Abilities can send their actions to the Watcher. Night will continue until a predetermined time, or until the Watcher decides that enough people have submitted their actions to advance the stage to Day.
