Quick Rating: Pretty Good

The Blackguard is killed, or is he?

Review: The past couple of issues of Powers have been a little different from the usual crime drama that Bendis writes so well. It just hasn’t really felt like Powers in a good while. However, with this issue Bendis has brought in a new murder case for Christian, Deena, and the entire Powers Department to investigate. This is a good thing.

This case involves the murder of the hero the Blackguard, who Christian mentions hasn’t been seen in awhile. They investigate the body and the profile of the victim and discover he has a real name, Matthew Michaels, and a wife. Both Deena and Christian go to break the news to Matthew’s wife, only to discover that Matthew is indeed alive and well. So who was in the costume? Turns out that Matt retired and sold his power amulet and costume to a fan. But who would want him dead?

This issue is really good and a step up from the past couple. We still have the new Retro Girl flying around, and I can’t wait to see where that goes. Plus we now know that Deena has Powers now from when she fought the Bug about two issues back. Powers has a lot of places to go, but I was just glad to see it get back to the basics of investigating a Powers crime scene.

Overall pretty good, and a step in the right direction.
