Review: Even though there is very little in terms of action in this issue, a great deal in the way of character development takes place in this issue. All of the major players deal with some pretty heavy revelations, and the stage is set for the action that is yet to come in this mini.

First we have Noel and Hazy, who are in hiding with the mysterious Joan, and some background on Heaven’s Militia. Joan once again sparks Hazy’s distrust of Noel, and she once again starts to question his behavior and seeks to find out exactly why he has been so secretive with her. We also find out the fate of Violet, which should raise some eyebrows. Elijah and Nara also make appearances in this issue as well, and we find out that they are dealing with some very serious issues of their own. Though not tied to the main story as of yet, it should be interesting to see how that particular plot point ties in with the rest at the end. Sorry to sound so vague, but a lot of this stuff does qualify as major spoilers, and I would hate to ruin it for you. Suffice to say that the story progresses quite well in this issue.

Josh Howard’s art is as consistent as ever, and I am pleased to see that he still hasn’t fallen back on the salaciousness that was so prevalent in Blood of Saints. In fact, the overall art in this volume so far is my favorite of the three – my eye isn’t quite trained enough to pick out specifically why, but I like it. He does do a lot of great visual storytelling in this issue, especially with the scenes between Nara and Elijah. He is really starting to show a lot of maturity as a comic book creator.

One interesting side note – I don’t know how many people picked up the Misplaced@17 one-shot – I did find that issue enhanced my enjoyment of this one. The way the dissident cultist kept referring to Hazy as the “incubator” really made the ultimate fate of Violet make that much more sense. Perhaps there is something to be said for a different writer’s take on a character making the original’s intent all the more clear.

Not sure if I would yet call Revolution as the best Dead@17 series yet, but it is showing a lot of promise. The plotlines from the first two series are coming together quite nicely here, and I am excited to see what is to come. Howard does seem to have a pretty good vision of this story, and it is clear that this is more than a “cash in on the success of the first” sequel. There is real meat to this story, and hasn’t been a let-down in the least.
