Review: This is a very Ellis-ian issue. If you’ve read even some of Ellis’s work, you probably know what I’m talking about, but if not, I’ll boil it down for you: drugs, philosophy, technology, and the line where they all intersect.

All of those are big Ellis topics, things he loves to discuss and explore, and like the first issue, this one has quite a bit of talking. Much of it is interesting though, and there’s even a funny moment or two, which is the saving grace of so much verbosity and so many big ideas that Ellis wishes to communicate to the reader. (But if you’ve read Planetary or Global Frequency, some of this might sound a tad familiar.) Later in the issue, this is split between a violent and inexplicable attack by the man “infected” with extremis in the first issue, and again, like an Ellis issue, it’s very violent. Certainly not Max level, but some of the images depicted in photo clarity by Granov may disturb some people. But then again, so might some of the drug and philosophy talk.

Still, it is used to give us insight into this take on Tony Stark, and it continues to be very intriguing. A brilliant man, a driven man … maybe a little unbalanced? On the edge of burnout or madness? As his mentor asks him, ”What’s the Iron Man for, Tony?”- a question that shouldn’t be a poser, but is, in its way. Although an answer presents itself at the end.

The art by Granov continues to be utterly astounding. It’s like looking at snapshots of real people’s faces and expressions, backgrounds and cityscapes, and there are a few panels during the action sequence that are chilling and honestly disturbing. The art can be like a punch in the gut, and there’s one panel in particular, where our extremis man is being shot at, that is one of the best things I’ve seen in a long time. Why? I’m not sure, actually, I just knew when I looked at it, all I could think was “Damn”. Where have you been all my life, Adi? The coloring is realistic, adding to the general effect, although it gets more intense notes in the action sequences.

I can see some people finding this dull, especially since Ellis is still building on the characterization of his Stark, and injecting philosophical and science notes into the overall story. But if you’re looking for a genuinely thoughtful superhero comic, with art that’ll just drop you to the floor, this may be the only game in town.

You're working late Andi...

Careful, Santa might not visit because of you staying up late like a naughty girl.

I'm always a naughty girl.

Wait, forget I said that.

Yep. Hardly seems like a Marvel comic - seems more like a DC when you read it. Can't say why, unless it's just the basic Ellis-ness of it.

Wow, his Iron Man got to the top twenty surroundings... When was the last time IM was this hot?

Answer: Back when Kurt Busiek relaunched it.

Andy -- in issue 1, everybody was treating Stark like they didn't know he was Iron Man.
How did that come about?

Okay, let me see if I can shorthand this.

A weapons designer in knock off Iron Man armor killed almost the entire corporate board of Stark Industries, and Rumiko. Afterwards, Tony held a huge press conference and said he'd be devoting his time to rebuilding his business, and would give his Iron Man suit duties to a bodyguard. Of course, he was lying, but the official line is it's no longer Tony in the suit.

I agree, very Ellisish, but we know the good stuff with the armor is coming.

Marvel has a few good books, unfortunately they are ignored due to the 85 million X-titles and Spidey-titles, not that all of them are bad. Ellis has Tony down almost flawlessly.

Marvel does have some very good titles, but oftentimes you have to dig for them, as they get lost in the "okay, but nothing special" X and Spidey titles you mentioned. Iron Man is certainly shaping up to be one of the more unique experiments they've done lately. Stark was always one of those characters that I could take or leave, but Ellis is building a fascinating character portrait here.

heh, this goes to the list of artists we both agree that are very very talented. the writers we both agree on, though, is much, much shorter.:)

Well, LM, it would be a dull world if everyone agreed on everything. :D

I see. Classic Tony then.

I still defend the opinion that Marvel goes on a vicious cycle... "we do 85 million X and Spidey titles cuz they sell, other characters don´t sell", when I think part of the reason why they don´t sell as much is because there ARE 85 million Spidey and X titles and they give tend to put the best writers and artists there. I honestly think more people would give a chance to a good IM title if they didn´t have to choose between it and Peter Parker The Amazing Spectacular Unlimited Spider-Man...

Other characters would sell if they promoted more then Spidey and the X-men. They have dozens of great characters, the problem is none of them get a chance to shine in their main spotlight if they aren't named Spider-man or X-men.

this is looking to be really good. you got the philosophical stuff going on with tony and maya, and then you got complete carnage on the other side. great

and im changing my opinion, i think andrea was right when she said they are making tony look a lil like tom cruise

i think andrea was right when she said they are making tony look a lil like tom cruise

I didn't say that!!!!!!!!!

I think Cruise looks girly, and I don't think Tony looks girly...yet. Hopefully never.:D

Story? There's a story?

My god, this book is great to look at.

I think what is making this work so far are the stark (no pun intended !) contrasts within a single issue.

Both Ellis and Granov switch between mundane and normal to violent and excessive in the space of a panel. One moment your looking at Tony drinking apple juice and hearing about drone on about mushrooms and the next panel your looking at someone's head being ripped open with no words needed. It keeps you guessing and I love it.

Yeah, it's a head trip without being psychedelic in any way. They keep you off balance, so you're never quite sure what's next.
