Review: I am so glad I’m getting to eat my words regarding this title. Diligent readers will recall that I was very nervous about the first issue, afraid that Andy Diggle was going to strip Adam Strange of the space opera elements that define the character. Since that first issue, he’s not only bringing in those elements, he is reveling in them.

Having escaped from the clutches of the Thanagarians, Adam finds himself in the hands of DC’s spacefaring superheroes, the Omega Men. While kind of an obscure property, the Omega Men do have a solid fanbase who will love to see them in this title and see what good use they’re put to. They don’t just show up as a cameo or a throwaway joke, they are an integral part of the plot, and even readers unfamiliar with them won’t be confused.

Even better, next issue promises the appearance of yet another of DC’s sci-fi properties. Diggle has used Adam Strange as his starting point, but he’s really using this title to explore the corners of the DCU outside of our little planet Earth, to bring those extraterrestrial concepts back to the forefront, and to show how great they are.

Pascal Ferry is very, very close to breaking onto my list of the best science fiction artists in comic books. This book is chock full of aliens, some humanoid and some of them far less so, and they all look good, solid, and even the most bizarre ones like Doc fit perfectly into the world they’ve created.

I’m gleeful that this miniseries is only half over – sometimes even six issues seems too many for some stories, but in this instance eight may well be too few.
