Review: Wow, it’s been a while. I reviewed the first issue of this title back in September, and frankly, even after re-reading that review, I’ve forgotten half of it – plus I’ve never read any of the Elric novels, so keep that in mind as we go through this review.

Young Prince Elric, still striving to prove himself worthy of his father’s crown, undergoes another Dream-Quest which makes up the bulk of this issue. In another realm, he gets wrapped up in a quest that’s full of war and dragons and other such things that teach him to be a great warrior. It’s all fine for what it is, but it’s not quite as gripping as one would hope. I suppose a lot of it is the long gap between issues – I don’t know if this was always intended to be a quarterly series or if it was delayed, but whatever the case, it would have been served much better by holding off on publishing until all four issues were ready to be released back-to-back. I’m finding it hard to recall the details from the first issue, and that’s most certainly holding off on my enjoyment.

Fortunately, I don’t need to recall the details to know that Walter Simonson is the perfect man to do the art for this comic. He’s always been one of the tops in the field of science fiction and fantasy, and he gets to play with both genres to a degree here. We get dragons and monsters, swords and sorcery – Simonson and Steve Oliff give us a great visual package that fans of fantasy art will gobble up. (I’ve also got to give him points because I realize what he’s doing with the covers of this series – we’ve got kind of a flip book thing going there.)

An okay issue. Give it an extra point if you’re an Elric fan and/or if you happen to have the first issue handy for to refer to while you’re reading this one.
