Review: I was surprised last issue at how well-told and accessible the second issue of this Warblade story was, even for someone like myself who hadn’t read the first issue and had only a passing familiarity with the character. This issue isn’t quite up to those same standards. It’s still pretty accessible and still dealing with the same strong story, but it’s kind of slow.

This issue writer John Ridley pulls back and spends a lot of the issue showing how the man once known as Warblade degenerated from being a superhero and member of the WildC.A.T.S. to being a handless, drunken bouncer at a house of ill repute. It’s not a bad story, but for the purposes of this series, it doesn’t appear to be particularly necessary either. It interrupts the narrative and kills the momentum.

What we do see is good – it’s a character examination, really, of a man who used to be a hero and wishes he still were, but no longer has what made him special. He still has the urge to be a hero, but he no longer has the capability, and it’s that tragedy of his condition that makes for the interesting reading in this comic.

Simon Bisley continues to do some dirty, gritty superhero artwork. It’s not customary to see superheroes (or ex-superheroes) with a potbelly, wallowing in filth. It’s not a pretty picture – even his buxom female characters are not particularly attractive, and that’s probably a good thing. This isn’t a pretty story. It’s a dark one, a nasty one, one that doesn’t offer a lot of hope.

This isn’t really a great issue, but it’s not horrible either. Fans of the character or the greater Wildstorm Universe will enjoy it more than I did.
