Title: You Only Hurt ..!
More angst and bruises for May, as the Goblin Queen returns … and there’s a new Venom in town.

Review: Several different past plot developments are gathered together here, closing up some while opening up others, and DeFalco does it all with great skill. You can see most of these things coming, but it doesn’t hamper your enjoyment of it. There’s a lot of action in this issue, and the plot promises even more action along the way. Of course, I’m one of those who thinks Venom has been overused as a villain and way overexposed, but he’s used to good effect here.
All of this promises to shake up May’s world, which is honestly shaky to begin with, but since it was starting to stagnate a little, this is good news for any fan of the title. Although I do have to ask this, based on the synopsis for the next issue on the back page: What’s the big deal about her black costume? Yes, it looks like Venom - is that why people like it so much?
The art by Frenz is good, sharper than usual, especially in the action sequences. But, just when I thought we could have an issue without it, there’s a nice panel breaking page of May in her Spider costume, where we see her hips jutting out painfully, looking sharp enough to cut glass. Ouch! I’m going to start that “Give May A Sandwich” campaign any day now. The coloring by Gotham is good, but leaps into the very good category in the last third of the book; they seem to notch up the intensity when Spider-Girl goes out in search of Venom.
An issue that rekindles my slightly waning interest in this title, it should be interesting to see where this story goes from here.
