Review: Well, The Last Train is over and I'm sad to see it go. Even though the story fell a little flat in the finale, I'd still chalk the mini up as a success. Whatever shortcomings it had were made up by the "fun" factor, just call me a sucker for outlaws fighting robots in the old west. It's just too cool of a concept to be boring, if only it had a submarine and a giant spider.
This is your typical western showdown, even down to the hero only having one bullet left before the end. It's just way too predictable to be a satisfying end to this mini. I never thought Daisy wouldn't make it out of this alive and intact, she never even broke a sweat. The strength of this title has been its characters and their relationships. Daisy straddles the same grey area that makes Batman and Wolverine interesting, she's not a bad person, but she's not above doing bad things to reach her goals. Winters is intruiging because he also lives in the same grey area as Daisy, except he's a little darker and not above hurting others to get to Daisy. What makes Daisy likeable is her relationship with Sheriff Tom, she could have hung Sheriff Tom out to dry at any point in this series, but she didn't, her feelings for him wouldn't allow it. Kibuishi's dialogue is also a strength of this book, the banter between Tom and Daisy just pops.
The pencil work by Kibuishi has been stunning. His landscapes are gorgeous, but its his work with characters that has really stood out on this mini. I was able to get a sense of the characters without reading a line of dialogue, the way each character carries him/herself tells a lot about them. His faces are very expressive and typically make his punchlines that much funnier, I could laugh at Daisy's "angry" face all day long.
