Review: This issue, Punchy’s secret admirer, the one who’s been sending him text messages, is revealed – and a late night rendezvous doesn’t go as planned.

But honestly, I don’t care.

This is the Super Hero as Soap Opera, and while Noble Causes has proven that this isn’t a genre utterly without potential, this book has none of the wit or charm of that title. The plot in this issue defines “cliché”. It would be perfectly in place not only on any soap opera, but any sitcom, and the conclusion is painfully predictable.

The characters in this book are stale clichés – a parody of a parody with no soul. The costume designs are hideous, the names are terrible and the personalities are the most annoying I’ve seen since last year’s abysmal Challengers of the Unknown miniseries. Every line that drips out of their mouths makes it sound like Joe Casey is desperately trying to make them sound “hip” and “with it.” When I get to lines like “She’s playing it cold flava,” I can’t help but think of a balding father driving his daughter to the dance and trying to throw out “her lingo” and pretending he actually likes “her music.”

Giuseppe Camuncoli’s artwork is pretty good – except for the unbearably ugly costume designs. But the pacing and layout is good, as are his faces and body structure. He’s a competent artist, but he’s not working with solid material.

Wildstorm Comics has always been pretty hit and miss with their various projects. This is about as big a miss as I’ve seen from them in a very long time.
