Review: As I said in my Gambit review, there comes a point when Wolverine must make an appearance. Usually it comes up soonest in X-Men related books, but not always, and proof of that is here. This one ties into the crappy “Enemy Of The State” storyline currently running in Elektra … oh, sorry, I mean Wolverine, but there are a couple of surprising things. Mainly, that Wolverine talks - he hasn’t talked an awful lot since he was brainwashed by Hydra - and none of his Hand buddies are lurking, as they usually do. Doesn’t mean it’s bad (not at all; it can’t get much worse than Enemy of the State), and it’s contrasted with the situation of the new Swordsman, which is somewhat similar, but different.

The thing is, I thought the last issue of Wolverine made it clear von Strucker was behind the master plan of killing and resurrecting superheroes for his own use ..? Oh well, no matter.

The Thunderbolts are included in this story as well. There’s a little dissention in the ranks, as Abe wants Jim to stay on the straight and narrow, and Jim really doesn’t like that idea. Songbird also gets a little suspicious of Atlas, and it’s about damn time someone did. As for whether or not we find out who the new Swordsman is, let’s just say clues are dropped, and I hope it’s not who I think it is, just because I never cared much for that character. But we’ll see; it could be someone totally different, from the Thunderbolts’ past, of which I have little to no usable knowledge.

Grummett’s art looks exceptionally sharp this time out, with some really crisp inking by Erskine. I think these two have finally found their “groove”, so to speak, and you could hardly ask for better art. There are many action sequences in this issue, and they have a nicely brutal verve to them. You should really check out the scenes when one character is falling and another goes after them - that could have come straight from the Spider-Man films. The color art by Sotomayor is rich and bright, and pretty much perfect, alternating between realistic and hyper-realistic tones that make characters pop off the page.

This continues to be solid entertainment with a high cheese content, but it’s a good kind of cheese. And, it’s a lot better than Wolverine.

I'm looking forward to this issue. I do have to admitt that the four preview pages for this issue. Summed up what the point of Enemy of the State is then the actually issues.

You know, I've noticed that - the recap pages tell you more about the story than the actual Wolverine issues do. Where are the editors? What the hell's going on there?

But, I'm digressing . This is about Thunderbolts...do you have any wild guesses on who the new Swordsman might be?

I'd like to believe that it's Hawkeye, already back from the dead. Of course, I haven't read this issue yet, so that might not even be a glimmer of a possibility. But I'd like it- and it would sweep his meaningless death right under the counter where it belongs

Umm...I don't want to rain on your parade, but unless I have his personality completely wrong, I'm going to say no. But power to you, brother - good luck on your quest. It probably will happen sooner rather than later..

I thought that too, but I've heard rumours tha Fab Nicieza himself has stated that it's not Hawkeye, so my second guess is:

Baron Zemo, the guy was a sword slinger back in Thunderbolts plus he was lefthanded, just like Swordsman, and he has big beef with Strücker

Another interesting possibility... but you'd think that if Zemo had those two moonstones, he'd really do something with 'em...

Didn't # 3 just come out?

Is it just me, or is this one shipping more than once per month?

offhand, though, sounds good...

just tell me it's STAYING at $2.99 and not increasing anytime soon....

Also...I'm in agreement that it's about time some suspicion comes up... I wanna know what actually happened with Captain Marvel, and whether it constitutes "dead-is-dead" or a twist that'll get resolved shortly, or be part of the story itself (like with Jolt back in vol. 1)...

The first two issues both shipped in November. Issue three shipped in December, now this one ships in January. It's a "mostly-monthly" schedule. ;)

And there's been no chirping about raising the prices of any regular Marvel titles past $2.99 yet. At least, not that I've heard. The minute it happens is the minute I take an axe to my pull list.

I hear that...

like I've been saying...$2.99 is my limit. Maybe $3 even, cuz $2.95, $2.99...they're all "three bucks" to me.

And once 'standard price' goes over $3, that'll pretty much do me in.

Unfortunately, though, I have yet to have a "roof" for TPBs, except I *HAVE* generally avoided the TPBs that run above $20 (Though I have a serious eye on "Maximum Carnage" and "Crisis on Infinite Earths," and fully intend to nab the "Age of Apocalypse" trades....)

Yeah, I'll pay more than $20 for a TPB if it's something that's WORTH more than $20. For example, the $40 price tag for the Bone: One-Volume Edition is freaking highway robbery. My price threshold for a TPB comes down to the page count and how much I want it.

Couple months back, I bought "Akira" vol. 1 in hardback for $15...absolutely worth the price, since the paperback's $25.

Yeah, some of the larger volumes are more than worth it! :D

I don't always note page count as much, unless I'm looking at similarly-sized volumes.

'course, also a case-by-case basis.

I'd say there's a hint about the Captain Marvel situation in this issue. But I'm not giving you any more than that. :D

Hell yeah. If you bought the nine Bone TPBs individually, it would run you about $180. Darn right I'll pay $40 for the one-volume. :)

On the other hand, I've been known to NOT buy a $14.95 TPB because it only collected four issues, which would have been cheaper to buy off the newsstand. (Marvel, I'm looking at you.)

aww...

Just an extra, teensy hint? a PM'ed hint?

~Walt
PS: or is that comment itself a hint. Hmm....is it Wednesday yet? :D

There's more from marvel that would be viable for me to buy/read "TPB-only", but my TPB collection and "prestige format" books are overwhelmingly DC. Like...I probably have more Superman + general DC (OR Batman + general DC) than I do "non-DC" as a whole.

But I don't like Marvel's pricing. They've gotten better about them the last several years, but they still seem to (+/- $.05-$.10) be the same price as the singles. Where with DC, very often, buying the TPB is like getting an issue free, almost. (I remember walking up to the counter with "Robin: Year One" 1-4 several years ago, and the owner telling me to put those back and wait two weeks--the TPB was coming out for $14.95--saving me $5.)

At the same time, I'm also guilty of "biting" when it comes to shamelessly-priced volumes. ;)
