I had the opportunity to read Superman Birthright. Great story and excellent way to tie him into the 21st century. It looks like the creators have taken the best of the Silver Age Superman and the attempted re-boot of 1985.

First of all, the old Krypton is back. It is an advanced society that is facing doom. Unfortanately, the ruling body is in denial. Jor-El works non-stop to offer a life for his and Lara's infant son. His craft barely makes it to Earth before he runs out of life support. I wonder if the Guardians of the Universe played a role here.

I like what they did to Lex Luthor. In the Silver Age, he was a brilliant scientist. The re-boot had him as a corrupt businessman. This version has him as both. The story also shows a history between Clark and Lex in Smallville. Lex is a very angry and paranoid young man with one of the highest IQ's on the planet. As he grew into an adult, he learned to mask this and tries to appear as a public benefactor.

Clark is mild mannered. He is not a wimp, but is non-confrontational. Instead of making him spinless as in the past, he is just one of those guys that no one really notices. However, he is an exceptional reporter in spite of how he comes across.

I want to commend the creators of Birthright. It was a story well done!

I'd have to agree, it was an excellent adaptation of Superman's origin for a modern DCU. The scene that gets me most is probably Clark wrestling with the lions -- there was something quintessentially Superman in that.

When I wrote the review for Birthright #12, I think I referred to it as the best version of Superman's origin EVER. I still stand by that.
