I saw this in the library todat and picked it up. I don't know anything about it. Would anyone with an opinion like to say if its worth reading or not? If you wanted to recommend some superman considering the only thing I have read is Red Son, that would also be cool.

This is ABSOLUTELY worth reading. Keep in mind, though, it's not the "real" Superman. It doesn't carry an Elseworlds label, but it qualifies. It's about a guy in the "real world" who happens to have the name Clark Kent (because his parents had a lousy sense of humor), who discovers he has powers of his own. But it's a brilliant examination of what makes Superman Superman, and it's got some of the most beautiful artwork Stuart Immonen has ever done. Read it. Read it now.

Starts out that way, but it turns out to be much, much more. Best Superman story in years.

Glad to hear it.
And if you dig it, go look up Superman: Birthright (for the best Superman origin ever), and any of the Astro City books, also by Kurt Busiek, which have a similar tone.

Oh, I agree. Birthright was fantastic. Best Superman origin ever.
But SI got deeper and really showed what Superman means, and may be even better in that respect.

I do my best.
The first issue is really different. The rest is something they could never do with DCU Superman because it involves him growing older and the world really changing as a result of his presense.

The other great Superman story is For all Seasons.

That's another great story that shows what makes Superman, Superman.

It's not collected in any trade that I know of, but Adventures of Superman #475, "Face to Face With Yesterday," is another one of those excellent stories that really shows what forged Clark Kent into the man he is.

I have often "tried" Superman comics, but always stopped because there aren't writers out there who can write the chracter well. Because really... an all powerful, near-perfect superhero? There aren't many cracks to work with.
But Superman: Secret Identity (picked up because Immonen is the man) blew me away. I thanked my comic shop guy profusely for stocking those four pristige issues ages after the series had run.

Man, have you been reading the wrong Superman comics if you think that's what he's like. :D

I prescribe a healthy dose of Superman/Batman, Birthright, Greg Rucka's Adventures of Superman, Action Comics #775, and Kingdom/Kingdom Come.

Superman: A Man for all seasons is in a nearby library and I will pick it up next time I am in that neck of the woods. Superman: Birthright is not in the catalogue yet, but as it is quite new, hopefully it will turn up. Many thanks for the suggestions people.

Suckers! :heh:
Actually, for what it's worth, my library got a big pile of books a couple of years back and since have added absolutely nothing to the collection, so once every two months or so I get to wander in there look at the rack and see the same titles they always have.
It bears some similarities to mental torture.

I got 7 of the 9 Preacher books from my library. They have Sandman, all the Fables (after I requested the third one ) Ultimate X-Men 1 to 3 (and they are buying the fourth one in for me.) All the Y: The last man, Sin City, Transmetropolitan, Watchman and most other Alan Moore Stuff, every 100 Bullets trade. It's great.

Update: I got a Man for all seasons from the Library today. I've started Secret Idenity and am enjoying it so for. There was a book there today called the trial of Superman. Is that any good?

It was decent, but not nearly as good as the rest of the stuff we've been talking about.
