Could anyone one suggest where to start with some good JLA trades. My local library has loads of stuff but I would not know where to begin.

JLA - New World Order
JLA - American Dreams
They're the first two trades of the current volume. Both have extraordinary art and writing.

I'd pick up the current Kurt Busiek storyline. It's a helluva read. Another older book is Virtue/Vice which is an excellent read also.

The JLA was my favorite comic book for a lonnnggg time, here were my favorite storylines.
You HAVE to get "Rock of Ages", it has EVERYTHING. An amazing start with a battle between the jla and hard light holograms of themselves, to fighting in an apocalyptic future(hint hint), and some humor too.
"American Dreams" imo was good, the story arc introducing zauriel was great and gave me a new respect for wonder woman and aquaman.
"World War 3" pretty much says it all in the title.
I thought "Tower of Babel" was an interesting read, its where ras al ghoul uses batmans own plans to take out the justice league. Not the best but its fun watching each hero get their respective asses handed to them.

i got interested in jla by the cartoon and reading kevs green arrow. Earth 2 is also a help.... I read some flash from a few years ago during johns still going run... i found it not my thing every one knew he was flash... and it just wasnt my thing. the problem with the early jla trades is the energy supes is in it and that could be confusing.

If I had to slice my comics buying to two titles, those are the ones I would keep.
but I've been a Justice League fan since 1960... have a complete run since Brave & Bold 28

I separate them like this:
Great:
Grant Morrison's run, New World Order through World War III
Mark Waid's run, Tower of Babel through Terror Incognita
JLA: Earth 2
Current story by Kurt Busiek
Pretty Good:
Trial by Fire
The Tenth Circle
Avoid Like the Plague:
Pain of the Gods (has one good Superman story, then repeats the same story over and over till you get sick)
The rest of Joe Kelly's confusing run, Golden Perfect through Rules of Engagement.

Have to disagree with you on Tenth Circle, that's probably the worst JLA story I've ever read. As for my joice, Vice and Virtue, the JLA/JSA crossover

and while I confess I don't HAVE one... so many to pick from... I DO have a favorite JSA story... the one last year which re-introduced Ma Hunkle to the JSA
if my arm was twisted, I might suggest JLofA 100-102 which reintroduced the Freedom Fighters to Silver Age continuity.
