ANY of 'em? Not even Zatanna or Guardian? :hrm:
I'm still undecided... it's a lot of miniseries to commit to. I may just wait for the TPBs.

Blake, it was great!
My ever-thinning wallet is also apprehensive of so many issues to pruchase, given the fact that DC COUNTDOWN is on its way and the fact that I'll have to read everything related to that, especially since THE OMACE PROJECT-related Big Brother Eye was obviously present in the last BIRDS OF PREY issue, monitoring Oracle's movements through Braniac-induced cyber-space.
As you know, I'm a sucker for anything Babs/BOP/Gail Simone -related (can't wait for VILLAINS UNITED!).
But I grabbed the SEVEN SOLDIERS OF VICTORY #0 to check it out (I like Zatanna, so I want to gear up for reading her mini-series) & it really blew me away. It's a mix of two very fun styles, I think:
#1.--one is a very world-coming-unraveled mystery (neither as clumsy as CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS nor as wild-goose-chase-like as a David Lynch film, but smacking of both these, at times), and
#2.--the other palpable style is used to tell the more microcosmic story threads that are laid over the greater cosmic mystery. The style to which I can most closely relate this storytelling is that of KINGDOM COME. It's that amazing-powers-and-gadgets-slapped-onto-people-will-not-make-them-any-less-human feel. Gritty yet still quite humorous in its sarcasm.
I've raved enough. Blake, you should check it out. If & when you're done reading this first installment, #0: I urge you to look back at what you read & consider the character development used in the movie PSYCHO.

I'm waiting for the trades. Too big an undertaking for single issues.
Blake Petit
February 24th 2005, 12:46 PM
The thing that bothers me with the trades for this is, how are they going to be collected? Will each of the seven minis have its own trade? How much will they cost? Where will the two bookend issues go? Will they try for one giant mama-jama trade? Will they make it two volumes?
Sooooooo many variables.
Cardiac
February 24th 2005, 12:51 PM
I have spent ages trying to fathom those very questions Blake. Too long in fact.

either way...DC is late as it is with trades...and tis wont end till over a year from now...Imma start now

Eight months, actually -- the minis are bimonthly. (I think. If I'm wrong, this post will self-destruct. )

its kind of bi-monthy depends on how you look at it,
Like shinning knight and I believe gaurdian come out in the same month but they dont reall(or at least from what i understand) build off one another...at least not yet.
see what i mean...you wont get Shinning Knight 1 and 2 in the same month in other words

I'm with you, Ryan. Given how fun that first issue was, all my suspicions (trust me folks, they were just as loud & daunting as your concerns are) have taken backseat to my hunger for more of this story! Sounds like a marketting set-up to make us dish out bux? It probably is. And for this tale, I'm getting in line to be duped outta cash. Gladly. :-)

I want to buy this series.
But I'm still confused as to how its to be broken down...
There's an issue 0...
...but what other issues have been printed this month?
Can anybody give me a month-by-month breakdown of this series...I need a list...I'm a man and men need lists to get through life. :)

I think it will be quite interesting, in April of 2006, to look at this list again and see how many of these books actually came out on time.
Kevin Reeves
February 25th 2005, 10:48 AM
here here
CATWOMAN: WHEN IN ROME has slipped (much to my chagrin, as it was a book I eagerly awaited back when it still came out on schedule) and who can forget...
...the just-kill-it-already tardiness of the BATMAN: DEATH AND THE MAIDENS installments (which I'm still burned about...the ever-widening gaps between issues only added injury to the fact that such awkward artwork was used to kill off a really sensational, long-standing villain such as R'as Al Ghul)?
Grant Morrison has bitten off a lot of writing to chew through.
Ryan Broussard
February 25th 2005, 10:50 AM
but its usually the art that kills the release dates of a series, this is a colection of artist...so therefore i think they will stick pretty close to the scheldule
Terry Verticchio
February 25th 2005, 07:14 PM
Okay, I just bought it today...
I knew I was in for a vintage Morrison story when I noticed the sprite riding the mosquito on the second page. Oh yea this is a keeper.
Kevin Reeves
February 25th 2005, 07:57 PM
oh yeah. the dark weirdness of this series conjures feelings of Tim Burton style & David Lynch storytelling (but slightly more cohesive).
Why do I feel like Grant Morrison is a freak (in a good way)? Like a really cool, trippy dippy freak? I eagerly await the first related mini-series.

OMAC PROJECT?? Fill me in. Never heard of this. I am a big OMAC fan. Hunted down all the Kirby issues, the Byrne 4 issue series, plus the OMAC back-up stories in Warlord and Kamandi. Is OMAC PROJECT a new series or title of a storyline in BOP? If so, what issues of BOP do i need??
Blake Petit
February 28th 2005, 10:49 AM
Just read it.
Meh.
It was all right, but it feels like Morrison is stretching to get all metaphysical and freaky again. He turns me off when he does that.
As for who the characters in this book are -- one of them (the old dude) was Vigilante, one of the original Seven Soldiers of Victory. (They were Vigilante, the Shining Knight, the Crimson Avenger, the Star-Spangled Kid and Stripsey and Green Arrow and Speedy of Earth-2. After the Crisis, Green Arrow and Speedy were retroactively replaced with TNT and Dan the Dyno-Mite.)
The other characters are all new, to my knowledge, although some of them are derivative of the original Seven Soldiers (Dyno-Mite Dan, for instance, and Gimmix a.k.a. Samantha Pemberton is probably related in some way to Sylvester Pemberton, the original Star-Spangled Kid).

What'd you think of the art, Blake? I really liked it.
As for the story, I've always liked Morrison's style, so I'm happy....so far.

It was okay. Suited the story.
Kevin Reeves
February 28th 2005, 12:26 PM
Maybe I'm so into it because I'm not overly-familiar with Morrison's prior forays into the metaphysical.
I should do some research, I suppose, because (until recent years) I didn't used to take proper notice of who was writing & pencilling & inking & lettering what. I used to be so escapist of a comic fan, I just never even looked at who did what. I just bought based upon the temptation of the storyline & became lost therein.
Maybe Morrison has written things in the past that I didn't like at all, & I wouldn't even know it!

February 28th 2005, 01:10 PM
I thought it was just a great superhero story, one of parody and respect, with hardly any metaphysical weirdness (except in the prologue and epilogue). I didn't really know what to expect. But I'm glad I'm glad and interested. I don't know how I'll be collecting it either. Probably end up getting it all, just like I did with "War Games" . . . even though I should show some constraint.

I'd pick up the rest even though DC says reader don't have to.
But with soooo many to chose from it'd seem a little crazy for me not to check out the first issue or two from the upcoming mini-series.
Gotta say i am most curious about Klarion the Witch Boy. Loved him since Jack Kirby intro'd him way back in The Demon. Anyone remember what his cat's name is? It slips my mind.
Regarding Frankenstein...do they mean the actual Frankenstein Monster? Trying to figure were he'd fit in the DCU.

DC did a comic once where the monster survived the events of the original novel and became a quasi-superhero. I believe it's that version of the character.
Kevin Reeves
February 28th 2005, 05:12 PM
I'm mostly interested in seeing the SEVEN SOLDIERS: ZATANNA and the SEVEN SOLDIERS: MISTER MIRACLE mini-series, as they both concern characters who I think are cool (from a distance), but actually know very little about, myself.
Plus, I'm curious to see how Morrison intends to tie so many totally different characters together!
Terry Verticchio
February 28th 2005, 07:45 PM
Well, Zee and Miracle are the two I'm familiar with as well, Kevin. But I am sure given the chance Grant can pique the interest in the other characters, as well. He took some realtively obscure characters with the Doom Patrol and made pure, unadulterated art.
Kevin Reeves
February 28th 2005, 08:24 PM
Nice to hear.
Given the fact that the first installment (SEVEN SOLDIERS OF VICTORY #0) was basically just a build-up of "sacrificial" characters to be fodder for the antagonist(s), and their relatively short lifespans in the book still caught my interest and got me to care for them....well, I'm confident in Morrison's character writing.
I'm on board for all mini-series, wallet be darned!

I know Marvel had a Frankenstein series but never knew of a DC one.
Do you know the title of the comic this appeared in?

Guardian and Shining Knight were brilliant stories. Talk about amazing!
So why does everyone prefer Zatanna? Is it the fishnets? Is she interesting?
Kevin Reeves
April 3rd 2005, 11:02 PM
I like Zatanna because she's not one of your pseudo-intellectual "spiritualists," or whatever...she's a roll-up-your-sleeves, lounge-act-style, bunnies-outta-hats performer magician.
For a spell-caster, her character (what little DC has shown, anyway, in recent years...I guess I should start reading her Vertigo-published titles instead!) is refreshingly grounded & "common-person."
Plus, although she's a sweetheart sometimes, she is the one who (about IDENTITY CRISIS)performed a magic labotomy on Dr. Light (& other villains?) & then tried to erase Batman's memories of it, just because he didn't ethically agree with the act. I know she didn't act completely alone, but she had the cajones to do it. That makes her character a tad grey (&, thus, interesting) in my opinion.
Fishnets don't hurt. Ask Dinah

Just read the first SEVEN SOLDIERS: ZATANNA book. I thought it was great! (thanks to very diligent moderators, I'm probably over-using spoiler tags....this one's about ZATANNA #1 & SEVEN SOLDIERS OF VICTORY #0)Sooooo cool to see all of the minis tying into one another in small ways....like in this issue, one of the women at Zatanna's support group is one of the women in the SEVEN SOLDIERS OF VICTORY #0

Just thought I'd revive this thread...
Zatanna #3...
Like wow. Things are really heating up now. The threads that connect all the titles is beginning to show through.
Hell, Grant has even shown that the rest of the DCU is part of the series, as Zee says she did something stupid when she was part of the JLA and got caught...which has to be about Dr. Light and Bats.
Just loving the art too.

Or he could be refering back to the first issue when SPOILERS Zatana had a hand in killing her friends. But I hope it's what you think, Terry. Either way, this is really becoming fun. Ali Ka Zoom showing up and insinuating SPOILERS that he was one of the original Seven Soldiers who died fighting the Sheeda. Nice.
