Ok, I need help Comics fans. I just read the Return of Donna Troy comic and... to be completely honest, have no idea what I experienced. I have never been so lost in my entire life. I have no history with the character of Donna Troy and, outside the big three (Supes, Batman, Flash) have little knowledge of the DC Universe.
Help!

No offense, but I think you guys are kinda missing the point. Donna is one of those characters whose past is jumbled and muddied by various retcons over the years (beginning with Crisis on Infinite Earths). This story is an effort to give her a definitive origin. No doubt those of us who've followed the character for years have a better idea of where it's going, but in a nutshell...
Donna is actually one of the original Titans, the first gods, from whom the gods of Olympus were spawned. Several of the Titans were born into moral hosts, living various lives, and that's what her life on Earth as Wonder Girl was.
It hasn't been completely straightened out yet, but that's what the next three issues are for.
As for the Rann/Thanagar stuff -- I don't think it felt forced at all. Quite the contrary, I think it went to show exactly how large a scope that story actually is.

Is she under some curse to keep being reborn in to more and more horrible lives and die a tragic death in each one?
And if that is so why isn't she trying to do anything about it. Every single villian who has ever been under a curse didn't rest a day till they got it removed, heros just seem to be like "oh well, this sucks".

Well, she doesn't remember her previous lives, after all.
Anyway, like I said, I think the whole point of this series is to explain exactly how everything works once and for all.

That may be, Blake. However, I spent two quid on a comic I barely understood. I'll stick with it but it's pretty damned poor so far. It wouldn't hurt to have a catch-up page in the front of the book. Being introduced to a new (she is to me anyway) character through memories even she doesn't understand threw me for a loop.
I really hope it gets better.

I've gotta agree. I had no clue what was going on, and because of it I found myself very bored reading through it. All of a sudden I'm supposed to care about a bunch more immortal living embodyments of gods who seem much more interested in mortal affairs than the rest of them? I dunno.
I was going to stick with it though because I knew she was going to play a big part in Infinity crisis. But now that I think about it, why should I. The stories probably gonna be this convoluted at least until the 3rd or 4th issue. I already know how the series is going to end, with donna troy back on earth. And I'm not even that big of a donna fan. And if the titans do get involved with the rann/thangar war they kept talking about, well then I'll read it in that mini-series.
Woo, I saved myself some money
The artwork was beautiful though.

well i did read this again with the new info in mind and nope, i just thought this was plain bad. i didnt care about any one who appeared in the book at all. and i think the idea of how there are bringing her back is bad in itself
and also, my perceptions may have been altered because of an interview i read by the writer of this himself. he pretty much said they had to go back to this first issue and redo parts so that it tied in rann thangarr. you can tell he did just that. didnt feel natural at all.
but as for future issues..hmm, might not be too bad if they show more outsiders and teen titans. at least that way if the writing is bad i still care about the characters

I can't remember the last time it happened, but I started this issue, and gave it up, sticking it down to the bottom of my read-pile.
I eventually read it, and while I certainly didn't understand it, once I didn't have other comics I wanted to get to waiting for me, I got through it, and am willing to come back for the rest of the series. Not sure if I'd be so willing if it were 6 issues, but at 4, I'll give it a shot...especially since I already gave in to the previews and now the books themselves on the 4 official countdown minis...
And I liked the art...something about it definitely reminded me of some of the comics I read back in the late 80s. :D

I'm afraid the return of Donna Troy may only work for longtime Titans fans. Now, I don't say this as a good thing--but from what I've read, you really have to know an awful lot about Donna's history and multiple origins to make sense of it.
If you've been reading Titans for years, this may be a fun book for you. If you're new to her... sorry. I don't think this is as novice-friendly as it could have been.

I'd have to agree with you, Calybos. I've followed the Titans since the Wolfman/Perez days, so nothing too perplexing for me. But I can see where the unitiated would be scratching their heads. Though Phil did try to put everything together.
Great art though.

I'll agree that this is definitely going to play more to long-term fans of the character, but really, isn't that true of ANY miniseries specifically intended to bring a specific character back from the dead?

The second issue was far better than the first I thought. It had Kid Flash in for one...
Seriously though, it seemed more like a story than a biography of some random Gods.

I was a marvel boy for years and started reading DC about 2 years ago, so I had no clue. I picked up issue 1 and thought "Wow this is kinda boring", but it was filled with so much bio/historical stuff that I thought that they were setting up something awesome. And then I boght isssue 2 and I was right, I loved it. Titans/Outsiders rocked out.

Some comics take time to build up...at least this book got going by issue 2...unlike another "major event of the decade." Still haven't bought issue 3 of that series.
But Donna Troy was pretty good. Good interaction between the teams. And I must say Phil is a fan of the character, as he has kept the story deep inside continuity. I'd give him rep for that, if he was here. ;)
