Might as well open up a thread, so. What do you think? IMO this sucks, simple. The only thing good about it is the sweet art by Jim Lee, that guy only gets better and better

Well, I've never been a fan of Jim Lee...his style is too scribbly for me.
From what I've read about this book, I don't think the reaction by the fans is quite what DC had in mind, but I'm sure its exactly what Frank Miller wanted. :joker:

Jim Lee's art is beautifull. I love it.
Millers writing sucks. I hate it.
It reads so much like sin city, that I'd call it a rip-off even though its the same writer.

LOL, is it possible to rip oneself off?
I bought number one, crazy with anticipation, then ... number two took forever to come out and I forgot to ask for a copy when I noticed it was "sold out".
I do not regret missing it, and keeping myself away from this title.

Two words...Quentin Tarantino...the man steals from himself all the time. And like Miller, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Whew - I thought it was just me that doesn't like this book. I was worried I wasn't a good enough DC fanboy :)
But since I'm a completist, I'll likely keep it until the arc finishes.

I dont hate it as much as the rest, in fact i dont hate it. I do think there is room for improvment. Miller need to do a few things to make this book go from "A little Disapointing" to "Good" IMO.
-Pick up the pace. Three stet up issues is too much. All 3 issues could be done about 2. I mean all of issue 3 was Black Canary desiding if she was gunna stomp a bar full of pigs, and the intoduction of All Star Supes! Wich reminds me....
-Too fast trying to establish an "All Star" universe. Establish All Star BM and SM as characters in there own books fully before you have them interact with each other or bring in other DCU chars.
-DO bring in the villains, these are more important than Black Canary, (as much as I do like her both regular and All Star).
I have no prob with a darker, angstier, grittier Batman. (and I still argue he didnt kill anyone (esspecilly intentional) in issue 2) If this is DCs Ultimate U, then they can change/update/reinvent all they want. Thats what this Marvels Ultimate U did, why cant DC?

I honestly don't think Frank Miller intends for this series to be taken seriously at all and he's just having a good time seeing how much he can get away with before somebody in charge pulls the plug

I honestly think Millar would do that. Maybe I just have too much respect for him and his past work to think hes screw around with Aacharacter like Batman, dedicated Bat and Miller fans, a potentialy huge series of books, AND drag Jim Lee along, all so he can get a kick.

its moving pretty fast , maybe too fast with Black Canary already in the mix at issue 3

I think the comic has the problem of conflicting styles. Miller writes a hard-boiled story, which Lee & Co. don't reciprocate. And vice versa.
The comic would be better served if it were Miller drawing himself or teamed up with someone who does more visceral artwork.

True. A gritty film but one that looks like a hollywood blockbuster. Lee's artwork doesn't fit the story, although the story is lackluster to begin with.
And issue #3 really irked me- 22 pages of story, but only 4 with Batman in it, and there was barely any real dialogue with Batman and Robin, just splash pages. Geez.

This story is slow, slow, slow....
It's plodding along like a tired elephant.
I understand you want to set up your "universe", but can't you move a plot along while you do exposition?
To this point we have Batman kindnapping Dick Grayson and a long story about the "birth" of the Black Canary. And that's pretty much all the story that's been advanced.
I also think the length of time between issues is hurting it as well. This isn't Planetary where the wait is justified by a killer story.

To me, it's a rip off when you're blatantly stealing somebody else's work. When you're blatantly stealing your own work, it's just derivative. :D
I've been painfully disappointed in this series.
