I just started reading this book..and think its pretty rad..but somethings are not sitting with me to well. 1) who's side are the people living in the DMZ on?
2) The people living in the DMZ...why dont they just leave?

1. Well, I think we're dealing with innocent people caught in the crossfire here. As well, I don't think this conflict is as cut and dry in who's fighting whom, like the Second World War. The ambiguities of war are very prevalent to me.
2. Why did the people stay in New Orleans during Katrina? Why do people stay in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia? Because they have no where else to go. When you're poor, you're options are extremely limited.

I need to get into this series, but I will just do it from a trade-wait point of view. The minute I found out it was written by Brian Wood was when I should have been reading it.

I see your point...but i would like to think that the majority of people living in NYC would have a means to leave.

I think the majority of people on Manhattan Island did leave. It's sort of a desolate place.

It's not just people not being able to leave, there are some people who will stick it out in their homes no matter what. For example, Katrina (again) and Mt. St. Helens.

Also, a lot of the people now CAN'T leave: they're on an island, where the access to land has been effectively cut off.
