Who here bought it this past Wednesday and did you like it? Time to respect this new Fantasy title from Wildstorm. I liked it actually. When I read the review I was going into it with the impression it would suck, but I was surprised. I might actually use this as my fantasy comic over Red Sonja now. Just some of things I liked in it that were good:

"Good Afterboobs Lady Skye."
"No, No... Absoboobly Not."
"Achoo-Boobs!"

And yet, it was done in good way with handling her dress wear. It is not like she is going around saying "look at me fellas". Even interesting that they decided to change her hair color from blonde to pinkish dark thing.

You've pretty much outlined one of the many reasons I DIDN'T like it... making a joke out of a cheesecake costume doesn't make it any better to me.

But it is ok for Red Sonja?

But it is ok for Red Sonja?

I didn't say that at all -- I'd love to see someone with the guts to put Sonja in a practical outfit. But adding yet another cheesecake heroine just compounds the problem.

But it is not like she is running around saying "Admire my cheese". That would be like making a joke behind Red Sonja's back. She just kill you the second it left your mouth. From what was explained, that is the dress attire of a Warrior and runner of her kind.

Because the writer and artist said, "We have her in a cheesecake costume. Let's justify it by saying it's the "dress attire" of a runner.

Not a particularly strong argument, IMO.

But it is the reason giving, it is the ways of this world, and thus I accept it. It is a fantasy, you gotta believe it. Otherwise it be hard for me to take Red Sonja serious no matter how much GRRRRRRRRL POWER she got going on in her outfit.

Ah, and now we've struck on the other big problem I have with this series -- the world she's in. It was so bland, so generic, so ill-defined... by the end of the first issue there was no hook, nothing to pull you in and get you interested in the world, and that's essential for a successful fantasy.

It is just the first issue. I hardly call one issue the defining nail in the coffin for any series most of the time (cough Blue Beetle #1). A lot of other people and review sites I have seen said they liked it.

And bully for them. I'm stating how I feel about it, not how other reviewers feel.

and no, the first issue isn't the be-all and end-all, but when you're creating a brand-new fantasy world, making the reader understand and accept the world is question is job one. That's just good writing.

So they decided to make another female character with oversized boobs and a skimpy outfit and this is gonna get women to read comics how?

How is Betty & Veronica going to get male readers to read them? Sometimes you need to accept that certain things are meant for their target audience.

Every comic has a "target audience," but that doesn't excuse a book that immediately alienates half of the potential audience for no reason. Unless you're arguing that women don't read fantasy...

And what target audience do YOU think Skye Runner was made for? It is not what the character wears, but what the character does that is important. Some women can view Red Sonja as a sexist material while other women can view her as a role model for a kick butt woman that takes no **** from men and she has the body and skills to prove it.

Thus, I go back to Betty & Veronica. Does that not automatically alienate an entire audience right then and there? Some things are better left for the audience they were intended for. Skye Runner can be accepted from both men and women, especially women who like to see women in strong roles.

And so far, she's done little more than get ridiculed for her outfit and complained that she can't be a knight.

I've currently got 15 issues of various Betty and Veronica comics in my collection, not counting their stories in books like Laugh, Pals 'n Gals, Tales From Riverdale and so forth. So I'm gonna say no, it doesn't.

But you are not the targetted audience for Betty & Veronica and whatever reason why you get them is not going to change that.

They explained why she cannot be a knight in the book. She lives in a "man's world." Not hard to get a grasp at how limited someone like her would be.

I thought of grabbing this because I have been impressed with Garza in the past (yeah he does the cheesecake like a bunch of others, but he has some sweet stuff). However I just don't have the money right now to get another book.

I was really impressed by Skye Runner. I have been looking forward to this series for quite some time, as I am a big fan of Ale Garza's work.

And I have to say I like a fair amount of T&A to be in my comics. I really like Red Sonja for that explicit reason, and I expect I'll like Skye Runner for that as well.
