JONAH HEX #23 REVIEW
Review by: Blake M. Petit Blake@comixtreme.com
Quick Rating: Great Title: Who Lives and Who Dies A schoolteacher’s encounter with Hex changes everything. Writers: Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti Art: Jordi Bernet Colors: Rob Schwager Letters: Rob Leigh Editor: Michael Siglain & Nachie Castro Cover Art: Jordi Bernet Publisher: DC Comics “This done-in-one issue of Jonah Hex is, as always, one of the best comics you could have picked up this week.” There – the obvious stuff is out of the way. Now for the details. Artist Jordi Bernet returns this issue to tell a particularly macabre story about Jonah being hired as a bodyguard and guide through Apache territory for a group of photographers. When the Apache are attacked by another tribe, the white men wind up at war as well, and Jonah finds himself chained up in the middle of the desert. Of course, anyone who knows anything about Jonah Hex would know this is just going to make him mad. This is a really effective story – it’s plot-driven, but the plot itself evolves from the character and really wouldn’t work even with another generic western hero. It helps show just how unique Jonah Hex really is. Bernet’s artwork is also uniquely suited to the character – this is a perfect western, with lines evocative of Joe Kubert’s best work, beautiful scenery, and scary men. Another fine issue. Why aren’t more of you reading this? Seriously.
