BETTY AND VERONICA SPECTACULAR #76 REVIEW

Quick Rating: Good
Title: Jingle’s Jangled and other stories

Jingle returns to help the girls with their Christmas Cheer!

Writers: Dan Parent & Mike Pellowski
Pencils: Dan Parent
Inks: Rich Koslowski
Colors: Barry Grossman
Letters: Jack Morelli
Editor: Victor Gorelick
Cover Art: Dan Parent
Publisher: Archie Comics

I’m not really the target audience for this book, which is half comic and half tween magazine, but I’m a sucker for a Christmas comic, what can I say? The main feature this issue is “Jingle’s Jangled” by Archie comics workhorse Dan Parent. The new boy at school catches both Betty and Veronica’s eyes, but neither of them know that the handsome “Jimmy” is really Jingle, Santa’s helper that they’ve met many times before. Jingle has screwed up one too many times in Santa’s workshop and decided he wants a vacation as a human, and seeing the girls fight over Archie makes him think that just may be the way to live. Of course, Archie’s life isn’t quite all it’s cracked up to be.

Mike Pellowski writes the back-up feature, “Present Tense.” The girls spy Archie shopping in the mall, spurring them to wonder what he’s planning to give each of them for Christmas. This is pretty much a gag strip, building up to a punchline. Fun, but not really memorable.

The book is filled out with fashion pages and gag bits like holiday “shopping tips” and a page detailing what each of the Riverdale gang wants for Christmas. There’s nothing particularly memorable about the issue, but there’s nothing wrong with it either. It’s a nice package for Archie fans, and for girls who are just getting into comics.
