THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #1 REVIEW
Reviewer: Mike D’Alfonso Spike_149@Hotmail.com
Quick Rating: Very Good! Title: The Lords of Luck: Roulette pt. one Batman and Green Lantern team-up to solve a very bizarre murder case Writer: Mark Waid Pencils: George Perez Inks: Bob Wiacek Colors: Tom Smith Letters: Rob Leigh Editor: Joey Cavalieri Cover Art: George Perez Publisher: DC Comics Batman is regarded as a detective that can solve the most perplexing mysteries that are presented to him- that is until Green Lantern calls for his assistance on a floating human body that is in orbit around the Earth. Is this a case that will stump even the world’s greatest detective, or does will this bring into dangerous terrain that is well beyond him and Green Lantern? For the second series to what was a very popular book, the action is almost non-stop, and hardly takes the time to slow down. All of the attributes that define the title characters are displayed here with flawless execution- not only do we see a bit of the classic iterations of Batman and Green Lantern, but there are some modern elements included that refine them as well. Even if this comes off as a good debut issue, it jumps from one act to another at a frenetic pace, so what I had said before serves to move the story forward, but it ends up having throwing a villain like Roulette into the mix with very little to do with the main plot; even if she was part of the catalyst of the story. George Perez is bar none one of the best artists in the mainstream, and he really shows that he still has what it takes to cultivate that coveted status. The line work on the characters is almost perfect, and the versatility of choreographing out one scene to another still holds strong. The Brave and the Bold is really coming off to a decent start- I eagerly await the next issue. I'm sorry for having to do this Ryan. *cracks Ryan over the skull with a hammer until he's thinking correctly*

I liked this issue. I thought it was a decent starting point for the series and I anticipate the next issue. My thoughts on the art are that I love Perez's work, always have. IMO he's one of the best ever but in this issue, it may just be me but it lacked that certain something that made some of the other books he's worked on jump out at me. Not sure if it was the colors or the lack of the uber team vibe like in his Avengers run and in JLA/Avengers but it just didn't stand out like he usually makes it. I have faith though that the next issue will shine a little brighter.

One plot hole
My only concern with the story was that Batman deduced a bullet could not have killed the man but he is then able to cut the corpse with a knife? Hmm... Waid can do better. The cover really drew me in though, not usually a DC fan

I'm willing to let that moment slide on account to the hunch that Batman had hatched after all of the information that he coralated to make him take that action in the first place.
