NEW WARRIORS #1 ADVANCE REVIEW

Review by: Blake M. Petit Blake@comixtreme.com
Quick Rating: Surprisingly Good
Title: Defiant
Rating: T+

Who are the new New Warriors?

Writer: Kevin Grevioux
Pencils: Paco Medina
Inks: Juan Vlasco
Colors: Marte Gracia
Letters: Joe Caramagna
Editor: Axel Alonso
Cover Art: Nic Klein
Publisher: Marvel Comics

I have to be frank here, I was not expecting very much from this series. I was pretty angry about how unceremoniously the old New Warriors were dispatched, and the idea of a bunch of new kids picking up the name just to “stick it to the man” wasn’t something that appealed to me. But, surprise surprise, the first issue of the new New Warriors was actually pretty darn good.

Some months after the Initiative has taken affect, there’s a mysterious, unregistered group taking down supervillains and leaving a tag that seems to indicate that there’s a new group of warriors bringing them to justice. Meanwhile, someone we haven’t seen since she “lost her X” on M-Day, gets a cryptic message that someone wants her help.

This, I suspect, is why I liked this issue so much. Although there are some new characters here, the viewpoint characters for this issue are ones that have been AWOL since House of M robbed them of their powers – characters I liked then and am happy to see returning now. The last page of this issue may take some serious explanation, but I enjoy the way things are starting to come together. It’s even a little reminiscent of how Night Thrasher assembled the original Warriors waaaaaaay back in the first issue of the original series.

Paco Medina’s artwork is quite suitable for this book – his style has a solid superhero look to it, and he’s got a familiarity with some of the characters here that serves them well.

Can’t really say much else without outright spoiling things, so I’ll leave it at this: even if you’re ticked about what happened with the original Warriors, at least give this book a flip. It may surprise you.

Great issue, great start and great art. Looks like I'll be adding ANOTHER book post-Initiative, geez.

Got it, thanks.

This was a great start; though not as good as Avengers: the Initiative...which I'm sure will be retitled "Adjectiveless" Avengers. I loved how the whole book it seemed that someone was always watching them...with the posters of the Thunderbolts & Tony Stark on the TV, etc.

I kinda doubt that, actually... the book doesn't really have anything to do with the Avengers at all. It probably should have just been called "The Initiative."

A title that's as accurate as calling this month's issue of Action Comics "The Adventures of the Smurfs."

Well...In a world where Peter Parker took off his mask & Reed Richards created Clor...you've got Heroes for Hire running around in New Avengers & Storm & Black Panther running around with the Fantastic Four...oh, and let's not forget it's Tony Stark not Nick Fury as the head director of S.H.I.E.L.D. so I'd say it would pretty much be following the new re-direction of the universe.

...and why oh why did you have to hate on the Smurfs Blake?

Oh, it's completely following the new direction -- it's just that the new direction in question isn't really about the Avengers. It's about the Initiative.

And I didn't mean to imply the Smurfs are BAD -- just that they aren't in Action Comics.
