JONAH HEX #24 REVIEW

Review by: Blake M. Petit Blake@comixtreme.com
Quick Rating: Good
Title: All Hallow’s Eve

On All Hallow’s Eve, Hex and Bat Lash face the demonic El Diablo!

Writers: Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray
Art: David Michael Beck
Letters: Rob Leigh
Editor: Nachie Castro
Cover Art: David Michael Beck
Publisher: DC Comics

Palmiotti and Gray have worked really hard since this book’s launch to make it read like a gritty, grounded western, one with its toes in reality (warts and all). Tossing in any sort of supernatural element would really throw the book off-balance… unless they sneak it into a “Special Halloween Issue!” So this issue features the return of two of DC’s other western stars, Bat Lash and El Diablo.

A witch makes plans to lay waste to the town of Coffin Creek, and to do so, she mystically imprisons the human host of El Diablo in a local saloon. To save the town, Diablo summons Jonah Hex and, possessing his body, stands side-by-side with Bat Lash to fight for the lives of the townspeople. The result is a nice little supernatural battle that would stand out in a regular issue, but is perfectly permissible for a Halloween special.

The artwork, however, is even better than the story. David Michael Beck has a real flair for this kind of story – lots of gunfire and hellfire, and it makes for a beautiful mixture. Bat Lash is the guest-star in this book that’s got a solo miniseries on the docket, but if DC does anything else with El Diablo anytime soon, Beck should be the first name on their list for the artwork.

An okay issue overall with great artwork. Nice for a little Halloween treat.
