2 IN 1 SHOWCASE EPISODE FIFTY-FOUR: X-MEN-MESSIAH COMPLEX

Episode Fifty-Four: X-Men-Messiah Complex
by Chase Bouzigard and Blake Petit

The biggest X-Men crossover in years has reached its conclusion, and so this week, Blake and Chase talk about X-Men: Messiah Complex. The guys break down the crossover, talk about how it affected each of the four titles, and give their thoughts on the future of Uncanny X-Men, X-Men: Legacy, Young X-Men and X-Factor! In the picks this week, Chase loves Nova, while Blake gives love to the criminally underrated Blue Beetle. Come back next week, when the guys will look at the X-Force family of books, and in the meantime, drop them a line at Showcase@comixtreme.com.

Music provided by the Podshow Podsafe Music Network.

Putting it on, and here we go.
Stopped reading X-Men just before Brubaker. I bought the first issue of RaFotShiar Empire, but it didn't grab me.
Thoughts on the podcast:

Mr.Sinister: I agree that he is not always written that good. However, I never got into him in the first place. I'ld place him in the category along with Apocalypse. Horrible characters imo.
Bishop: I actually liked the way he was written in X-treme X-Men.
Academy X: I agree. That was a great book. Stopped picking it up after the first couple of issues of House Of M.

Bad X-books? You forgot Emma Frost and the X-Men Icons limited series.

Guess I'll pick up the Messiah Trade.

I havent truly liked a mainstream x-book in quite a while(with the exception of David's X-Factor, which i dont truly consider an x-book.) but i liked this crossover. IT had a bunch of good elements... Bishop turning on the team, sinister getting killed, Xavier getting shot in the face (YAY!). Lets not forget the cool way Emma Frost kicked Exodus' ***. That was a cool scene. My one problem, is the X-Force book thats going to start. I have to vote NAY on yet another Wolverine book. I think Marvel should actually kill him off and keep him dead for at least a year or two in order to force people to think of better stroylines instead of just "Lets throw Logan at them". My Two Cents.

I agree on the X-Force book, it seems so forced. So the characters all have claws or knives...whoopie.

Well, first off you can do great stories with Wolverine. And you can't kill him.
Second, as long as Wolverine sells, they'll keep using him.

Well, you guys mentioned bad periods on X-books. The Emma Frost solo title was good at first (iss 1-6) but the rest...ooh boy. Bad, and then some Well, at least the covers by Greg Horn were easy on the eye.
The Icon books were limited series based on one X-character, they had one on Rogue, Iceman, Cyclops and Nightcrawler. They came out during the time Morrison started the X-run.

Yes, but Wolverine seesm to be the only character that appears so often that its impossible to describe HOW he's in 3 places at once for any type of continuity... Sometimes he's in westchester, sometimes hes in new york, sometimes he's in outer space, sometimes he's in japan... and this is all in the last year. And its not impossible to kill wolverine. Drop him in a volcano or shoot him into the sun. I would like the character gone, at least for a little while. Dont get me wrong, I like wolverine, and he's had some of my favorite moments in comics. But it's getting OLD.

I agree with the continuity errors. But it's like anything else, supply and demand. People buy Wolverine, bad story or not. I don't like it either.

Its also why Joe Q will keep doing the crap he wants to do like One More Day... people keep buying the spider books no matter how much they hate whats happening, and theyre gonna keep doing whatever they like. The only thing they understand is money, and if we keep paying them to suck, theyll keep sucking.

That's where I disagree. I don't keep paying. If I am not enjoying the stories, I don't continue buying them. My completist days are over.
That's why I feel so bad for having missed Messiah Complex. I was so burned out on X-books after Austin and Milligan, that I stopped buying them, and wait for the trade when the story was deemed good.

I didnt mean you specifically, I just meant the comic-reading populace in general. Theres only one way that we can truly make our feelings known about things like that, and thats with our wallets.

What did surprise me in the podcast was Chase's remark (or hint) that Marvel is planning to stop the Ultimate line. I was completely unaware that anything like that was in the works. Last I read was that they were thinking of an Ultimate Wolverine book.

You forgot New Avengers and (probably) Uncanny X-Men.

But where did you hear Origins was ending? Last I heard, they were replacing Dillon as artist (he's moving to Deadpool) and keeping it going.

Oooooh i wanna see him lose his powers somehow and have the adamantium in his bones kill him, like they mentioned in the last issue of House of M. And yeah, he's in like 6 books steadily, plus guest starring in some others once in a while... its just over-saturation and im getting tired of seeing him.

Aw, moving Dillon to Deadpool? Argh. That kills any possible interest I might have had in Deadpool. Dillon needs to do other stuff, and nothing Wolverine or Deadpool related.
