Episode Fifty-Six: The Showcase Tangent
by Chase Bouzigard and Blake Petit

The Showcase Geeks have been having a lot of fun lately going through your messages and e-mails... so much fun, in fact, that this week we're giving you the first-ever 2 in 1 Showcase Feedback Special! This week, you steer the conversation, as the guys answer an avalanche of questions and discuss comments on everything from Brand New Day to Exiles to the question of what the worst DC Comics crossover of all time really was. They spin off onto Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles, Lost, and Chase breaks the needle off the Geekometer with a classic Star Trek rant! In the picks this week, Chase presents Chronicles of Wormwood: The Last Enemy, while Blake bids a fond farewell to Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's Vertigo mainstay, Y: The Last Man. The guys are also prepping new episodes, so send them your choices for your favorite Nightwing stories, your favorite Wonder Woman stories, and your favorite Western comics to Showcase@comixtreme.com!

Music provided by the Podshow Podsafe Music Network.

Great fun show, guys.
Absolutely loved the Star Trek rant. Pure geek-goodness.
Really loved the fact that there are ****-fans out there.

Chase, living in Europe is the same as being dead?? (re. Harry Osborn) And then I get yellow-carded.

Thanks,
I knew I would regret that statement the moment I made it. I love Europe and will be on a trip in the next year. However in comic terms Harry in Europe is about the same thig in comics, I mean how often dose Spider-Man head that way. Sorry.

If you count Latveria Europe?
You needn't say sorry, I understand what you mean...now.

(Are you doing a trip to different countries in Europe?)

Super solid episode. Liked the feedback-filled shenanigan of a hoot-a-nanny! Looking forward to the Nightwing episode, him being one of my more favored DC characters......

Oh, and your Star Trek rant was priceless, Chase. An instant classic Showcase moment right there...

Rocky IV?! Rocky IV?

Ugh!

Drago kills the best character in the series. He intentionally Kills him in a boxing match. He would have been shipped off to Siberia as punishment for killing a beloved American icon during an exhibition match.

And Rocky is going to 'avenge' the loss? How? By beating Drago in a boxing match? That balances the scales? 'Avenging' Apollo would be pulling out a gun and shooting Drago while he was running on his treadmill, or slipping poison into his steroids.

Worst. Rocky. Ever.

Oh, I agree with you.
But I think Drago would not hape been shipped to Siberia for that reason. They would treated him like royalty.

Perhaps. It's just that the Cold War was a "war" fought through economics and propaganda.

The sight of a young Russian man beating a retired American boxer twice his age to death would likely have made the Soviets look bad, and wind up being a propaganda victory for the West.

Ivan Drago would become the most despised man in the world overnight, and what nation was Drago supposed to be representing?

Guys, excellent episode, and I'm not just saying that because you spent a good chunk of it answering my questions. Chase, I'm glad to hear that you are a Stargate fan, because you described it as the same reasons I enjoy it. It's got humor, action, and a little bit of character development without being too "thinky", i enjoy just being able to veg out while watching an episode now and again.

I disagree with Blake's opinion on Dan Slott taking over Exiles because i just have a personal grievance against Dan Slott, because I'm a big fan of Juggernaut and anyone who has read a bunch of Dan Slott will know why i'm a little miffed.

Keep up the good work, guys!

I'm glad you included DS9 in your "Chase Approved Star Trek Topics." It is the best of trek.

Honestly, I don't know why you're mad. I've read a bunch of Slott's stuff, and the only reference I remember him even making to Juggernaut was to FIX one of the stupidest, most damaging stories ever told with She-Hulk.

We do kinda spoil the season 4 premiere, but we don't stick on the topic for long. When we start talking about it, just fast forward about two minutes and you'll be safe.

Well, the fact that the US was so arrogantly convinced a retired boxer would beat a young Russian made them look bad. It was a slap in the face of the Russians when they had him come up from the floor, with Creed dancing and jiving along with James Brown. Drago showed Russia wasn't impressed with all the Americana, when he beat him in his own country. By all rights, Ivan Drago became a national hero. (Mark Millar would have cheered. )
Besides, it was't murder. He died in the ring. Honourably.

Yes, but thankfully those didn't play any role in the end of the war. Economics and propaganda did.

It was an EXHIBITION match! It was a photo op and a glorified sparring session. The impression I always had was that the Soviets intended to humiliate Creed to embarrass the West and show how the U.S.S.R. represents 'the future.'

Drago then stupidly killed an American icon half his size and twice his age. He would have been shipped off to the gulags as his reward for 'winning.'

That's the only thing you wrote that I agree with!

You know one of these days, there's going to be a podcast, and I'm not going to get drawn into a pseudo-political debate. Someday.......

Despite my utter disdain for this cinematic excrement nobody can accuse me of not loving my country. In fact, even though I can now accept that there are other countries, I'm still not happy about it.

Dolph Lungren is such an awesome person. He's fluent in seven languages, has a Phd in Chemical Engineering and is his country's national kick boxing champion. To date there's only one thing he can't do: act!

And he's determined to get it. He's convinced that eventually he'll crack that code and be the world's best actor too. That's drive.

I know it was a stupid portrayal of Shulkie... but it was also in continuity, and I HATE retcons. As a writer taking over a character that has been written before, it's your responsibility to deal with what has happened to that character before, not to ignore past events just becase you dont like them. Defending Slott in this case is, in principle, like defending Joe Q and One More Day, though on two COMPLETELY different scale. I like Dan Slott, I think he writes very well, has a good grip on humor in his books, and I understand why he didn't LIKE what happened, but man up and deal with it instead of trying MULTIPLE ways to retcon it out, none of which really worked.

I completely disagree here -- Slott gave us a continuity PATCH, a way to EXPLAIN all of the continuity gitches and poor characterization that have cropped up in Marvel comics over the years. He didn't IGNORE the She-Hulk/Juggernaut story, he found a way to actually make it fit. OMD was nothing BUT one enormous continuity glitch that Slott's patch can't even START to fix.

I really regret mentioning Star Trek.

It's like I made this little comment and it caused the Six Day War.

Still, liked the show.

And the very real fear of the nukes. There were American bases with armed nuclear rockets stationed in my country. And not only my country, but in neigbouring countries too. I was born in 73, I remember the latter part of the Cold War vividly.

Of course they did. That was the point. They antagonised Dargo with all the Americana. You wave a red flag, or in this case the red, white and blue, in front of a bull and it'll get mad. What must poor Ivanovic Drago have thought when they blasted him with James Brown and his "Living In America". They intended to hurt his feelings, since Drago came to defend his country, countrymen and Russian way of life. The end result was Apollo Creed getting creamed.

Think about that. Stupidly killing an out-of-shape older man... If we put Mohammed Ali and Randy Couture together, might it be conceiveable that Randy Couture stupidly kills Ali? Of course it s. It's a contact sport.
