2 IN 1 SHOWCASE EPISODE 59: WESTERN COMICS

Episode 59: Western Comics
by Chase Bouzigard and Blake Petit

This week, as per your requests, the guys dive into Western Comics! Why does Blake love them? Why doesn't Chase? We touch upon great western heroes from Jonah Hex to Bat Lash to The Lone Ranger to Zorro to less orthodox western yarns like Preacher, The Ballad of Sleeping Beauty, The Kents and The Dark Tower. (And if you want our thoughts on the new Zorro comic, check our our mini-Episode 58.5.) After a feedback-sparked debate about the quality of children's comics, the guys get to this week's picks. Blake chimes in for Fantastic Comics #24 -- the beginning of The Next Issue Project -- and Chase starts to celebrate Fantastic Four #554... until he remembers reading it. Send your comments on this or any other episode to Showcase@ComiXtreme.com!

I'm not much for western comics (or weasterns in general), but I do have comments on some of your tangents.

Thanks for not spoiling the end of Dark Tower. I'm only half way through Wasteland.

I thought the end of the Stand was good.

How can you say no 80s cartoons stand up today? I think transformers holds up. But He-man was alway pretty bad. Even I knew they were reusing animation when I was a kid.

A couple thoughts from the show.....

-- Never really got into western comics because I've never really liked western movies. Jonah Hex does interest me with your descriptions of the ongoing, though.

-- Never knew Preacher would be considered a western comic, despite several things used in the series. I do see what you guys are saying about a "western feel", but never personally thought it would be considered an actual western. Guess I never realized it until you two mentioned it or I think too narrowly.

-- The Fantastic Four DO have a major tie-in to Secret Invasion. They have their own Secret Invasion mini-series in fact.

-- Why did you even pick FF #554 for pick of the week, then? You didn't even get into your positive thoughts before switching sides.

Which version of The Gunslinger did you read? The original, or the revised version?

The end of The Stand was good, but I thought the actual climax was weak... very deus ex machina, the whole
thing.

I think the TransFormers MOVIE holds up extremely well, but the cartoon show? Eh... some episodes, yes, but as a whole, it doesn't still work for me. Sad, but true.

That's it. Sue is doomed.

I can't speak for Chase, but I'm going to guess he did it because he wanted to mess with my head, knowing that I was going to hate that issue and expect him to love it. Ah, that wacky Chase.

Yeah, I KNEW you were going to hate it... Very much like Mark with Kick-***, I was reading #554 and thinking "Boy, is Blake on CX gonna hate this." Then I finished reading it and throughly enjoyed it, so yeah, that pretty much stamped it that you weren't going to be a fan. In fact, I'm surprised you even read it.

I wouldn't have paid for it -- I'm dead serious about voting with my wallet -- it was sent to me to review. (Unfortunately, the review pack got delayed in the mail, so I didn't get to advance it. But fear not, I'll advance review #555 -- it's sitting next to my computer even as we speak.)

I'm sure I read the revised one because I picked it up within the last year.

I won't go into why I liked the whole
thing, but I did like it. I thought it was a good balance against Flagg. I'm sure I give it a bit of a pass because it's one of my all time favorite books.

I still like the TF cartoons, and I think it still plays well today. I wish I could get the original episodes unaltered DVDs(I was so irate by what Rhino did to their release). I watched the TF movie last weekend in a fit of nostolgia. good stuff.

I listened to the Podcast, and I'm not entirely sold on the idea of Preacher being a Western. I like those trades a lot, but I just can't see it.

Fantastic Four 554. As much as I wanted to love this (Millar and Hitch blew me away with the Ultimates), it doesn't feel like the FF. I'll be along for the ride, as I tend to give Millar the benefit of the doubt, but I hope it picks up.

Chase, if Blake hadn't told me beforehand that your FF pick of the week was a rant, I would have wanted to harm you before you said you hated it. And I can tell you with certainty that BMB had no clue what he was doing with the Skrull Invasion. My friend over at Marvel has gotten no less then 400 e-mails with updated lists.
