Dr. Jones
My buddy Chase's review of Indy was interesting. The tone of voice in the review was so deadly serious that, combined with the use of the title "Crystal Skrull" throughout, I was suspicious that any second Chase might break out laughing and reveal that the review was a gag and that he actually loved the movie.
That said, his review sounded completely plausible. I haven't seen the movie, but it sounds pretty much like what I was expecting, given that Spielberg's been on my directorial poop list ever since the McDonald's commercial-cute little girl used her spunky gymnastic powers to kick a velociraptor unconscious in Jurassic Park 2. And despite her stellar acting rep and awe-inspiring beauty, I've been suspicious of Cate Blanchett's scenery-chewing tendencies since I saw her horrible performance as a suburban American housewife in the film Bandits. I don't think I'll be checking this thing out unless someone puts the DVD into a player somewhere in my vicinity and I have a broken foot that prohibits me from leaving the room. |

Ehm, Chase...copyright infringement on Mark Millar Appreciation Society.
I feel flattered, but please credit the idea. Where is the link to facebook?Nice episode. Some remarks (halfway in): - I predicted the new Indy to be a turkey. Yet to see it though. - I loved Superman 3. When you are young, and there are very few superhero comics to be found...I was just so pumped. I still love it. - The discussion on Batman, the tv show. It was campy, but cool. Come on, when you have a hero dressed like a bat and his sidekick is a canary-clad young boy, and these are the 60ies...well, that's what you get, I reckon. - Stardust: awesome...and I agree on the Princess Bride comparrison Last edited by Wolverace; May 25th 2008 at 07:48 AM.. |

Speaking of yer hero Mark Millar, Chase, unfortunately he's played you for a fool. He was the guy who perpetrated the Orson Welles Batman movie hoax you reported in the latest episode as real. See the Wikipedia page for further info (I heard Millar discuss it in an interview on the Fanboy Radio podcast):

Fact check squad returns:
James Marsters ("Spike") = American. Chase said he does British TV all the time, but as far as I know he's probably just basing this on Marsters' guest role on "Torchwood." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Marsters And in case you didn't know, Alexis Denisof ("Wesley" in Buffy/Angel) is also American (his British accent is perfect, better than Marsters's, in my opinion), as is Juliet Landau (Spike's girlfriend "Drusilla"), although she spent part of her childhood in England while her dad was filming "Space 1999." Final Buffy trivia just for yuks: Anthony Head, who played Buffy's mentor Giles, is the brother of the guy who sang the '80s hit "One Night in Bangkok" (although from your show, I'm taking it that this song was before your time -- I'm older than you dudes). |

Wikipedia says he was born in California... I knew Juliet Landau was American. Never really thought about Wesley before. Not familiar with "One Night in Bangkok," but I do know Anthony Head has a few CDs of his own.

"One Night in Bangkok" was a massive worldwide #1 hit back in the '80s. It was written by the two guys from ABBA (they divorced the two girls but stayed together as songwriters) as part of their musical about an American chess master and a Russian chess master who compete both for the world chess title and for the love of the same woman (really!). Anthony Head's brother, Murray, was the star. Here's the cheesy video (I still like the song): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDh3t...eature=related

Since I tagged mistakes I guess I should even things out by saying I like yer show. A few weeks ago I tried sampling all of the comics podcasts I could find on iTunes and your show was one of only five out of dozens that I thought was worth subscribing to. Since then I have downloaded almost every episode and listened to most of them.
The funny thing is that I don't even agree with you guys on a lot of your choices, but the combination of the thoughtfulness and humor with which the show is presented make it worthwhile for me. The Liefeld episode was something else. I gotta say I disagree with you, Chase, in that your hypothesis held that everyone loved Liefeld back when he was popular and that the backlash against him is a matter of historical revisionism. I'm not saying this to be condescending, but back when Image was founded those guys were loved by comics fans your age (as well as by the comic book shop owners who profited from your generation's business, until the variant cover/hologram cover/foil cover/bagged with card collector speculation boom went bust and a lot of shops and distributors went out of business shaking their fists at Image/Valiant/Malibu), but a lot of the guys actually working in the comics business weren't won over, and regarded the Image clan as style over substance, the triumph of fan favorite artists who thought they didn't need writers to make good comics, and as a result came out with a lot of less than intellectually fulfilling stuff. The only original Image guy I liked back then was Sam Keith, who wasn't one of the Image owners but whose quirky "Maxx" comic was part of Image from nearly the beginning. Anyway the main point is that despite differences in taste, I think you guys are doing a great job. Kudos! |

One other thing from listening to these shows... As a comic/book/music/movie collector I can't imagine what it must have been like to have my collection flooded. My sympathies to you guys. I know people suffered worse (dying, losing loved ones), but comics getting flooded still strikes a nerve. Glad you guys made it through with enough good spirits to put on such an upbeat podcast.

D'oh! He's done talking about it before I even got here! I hope Wolverace hates Indy 4. That way I can at least go a few rounds with my "Chase."
