BIRDS OF PREY #119 REVIEW

Reviewer: Terry Verticchio terryvert@hotmail.com
Quick Rating: Extremely good.
Title: Welcome to Platinum Falls

The ladies begin their new lives in Platinum Falls and right away they're making an impression, unfortunately it’s the wrong kind.

Writer: Tony Bedard
Pencils: Nicola Scott
Inks: Doug Hazelwood
Colours: Hi-Fi
Letters: Sal Cipriano
Cover: Stephane Roux
Editor: Mike Carlin
Publisher: DC Comics

Platinum Falls is a quiet town. Perhaps too quiet. There is hardly any crime. At least of the meta-variety. That is until the ladies set up shop or that is how the locals view the presence of super heroes cleaning up the streets. They blame the superheroes for attracting super-criminals. Of course underneath that tidy veneer is a nefarious mastermind, which Babs and her posse want to nab. In the meantime, she has sent Manhunter to keep an eye on Dinah, who lives in nearby Star City, but things don’t end well on that regard either.

This story flows very well, Tony Bedard’s dialogue is crisp and the pace is perfect. I also liked the touch of the title “Birds of Prey” actually being considered as a team name in the book. Strange that after 119 issues this was the first time it was every used. At least I don’t recall it ever being mentioned in Gail’s run. Again, a nice touch.

Okay the art. What is better than awesome? How about awesomer? Awesomaroony! What ever you call it the art just blew me away right off the bat. Lines, colours, action, faces, all of it is fantastic. Big, bold and brash. Loved it.

This title keeps on trucking and I’m glad. Tony Bedard is quickly making this title his own.

Birds of prey as a team name was suggested by lady blackhawk sometime before IC, she made a joke how they all fit, except she did not know what an oracle was

Bedard's done an amazing job for the first two issues.
