IMMORTAL IRON FIST #16 ADVANCE REVIEW

Review by: Blake M. Petit Blake@comixtreme.com
Quick Rating: Good
Title: Happy Birthday Danny
Rating: T+

It’s Danny Rand’s birthday – but will it be his last?

Writer: Matt Fraction
Art: David Aja
Colors: Matt Hollingsworth
Letters: Dave Lanphear
Editor: Warren Simons
Cover Art: David Aja
Publisher: Marvel Comics

With his birthday approaching, Danny Rand decides to enter a new phase of his life. While the other champions of the cities of Heaven searching for the fabled eighth city, Danny decides to take the fortune he has amassed and give it away, trying to do good with the money won by dark means. As he seeks allies – an old friend, a new love – he makes another discovery about the history of Iron Fist… a discovery that make leave his days as a hero numbered.

Matt Fraction has taken an interesting new direction with this story. The champions of the Seven Cities are somewhat marginalized as Danny’s attempt to reinvent himself takes center-stage. Although this particular storyline is nothing new (tons of heroes, most notably Green Arrow, have gone through basically the same phase), Fraction executes it well and uses the character’s past and relationships to help support it in an original way.

Aja’s art, as usual, is very strong. He handles all of the characters here well, and although this is a low-action issue, it never looks dull or uninteresting.

The last-page cliffhanger is what really sells the issue, setting up an intriguing problem for the next leg of this series. It should be interesting to see just how it all plays out.

It's not a bad book, but I don't love it as much as some of these guys.

I highly recommend this book. Not only is it fun comics, but it's good comics. You cheer when you read it. So awesome.

So would jumping in on 1 and reading up to 16 be the best bet or should one jump in at some other spot?

This is actually a pretty good jumping-on point. It relates to the previous storylines, but it explains it very well and it begins the new status quo for the title.

This isn't a bad jumping on point if you want to starting read the title. But I highly recommend the previous 16 issues as well in trade or something.

They have really done a great job with what many feel is a lower tier character. They make you feel for him, want him to win and want to read more of exploits.

That being said... I think after this issue I'm done.

because the only other comic under his belt currently is the Cable run that's going on now... which is luke warm to say the least.

You guys should all know, you're only as good as your last project!

That's some flawed logic, dude. Even the greats are better on some books than others.....

I never said I was perfect :P

Sides I need to trim some. I've been spending over 100 a month in comics and my budget needs to come down some.

You got it. Immortal Iron Fist has had some of the best covers in the biz over the last year or so. I really dig 'em.
