CAPTAIN AMERICA #39 ADVANCE REVIEW

Review by: Blake M. Petit Blake@comixtreme.com
Quick Rating: Good
Title: The Man Who Bought America Part Three
Rating: T+

The pretender seeks out Bucky!

Writer: Ed Brubaker
Art: Rob De la Torre
Colors: Frank D’Armata
Letters: Joe Caramagna
Editor: Tom Brevoort
Cover Art: Steve Epting
Publisher: Marvel Comics

The Red Skull’s fake Captain America – the holdover from the 50s – is back in action, saving the life of a presidential candidate that also happens to be in the Skull’s pocket. While Bucky and the Falcon investigate the new man wearing Steve Rogers’s face, a pregnant Sharon plots her escape from the Skull’s clutches.

This is mainly a moving-the-pieces issue. Brubaker is shifting around the various players to get them in place for a big fight next issue. Bucky and Other Cap are poised to tear each other apart, and Sharon will have a major struggle ahead of her if she’s going to escape the Skull. As far as insidious supervillain plots go, this is a pretty good one, and Sam and Bucky don’t waste any time wondering if the new guy could actually be Steve. Sure, with the world they live in resurrection is a fact of life, but that doesn’t mean it’s likely. Yet, at least.

Rob De la Torre’s artwork looks pretty similar to Steve Epting, giving the book some nice visual consistency. This is probably mostly due to the colors of Frank D’armata – he keeps the book looking more or less the same regardless of who is doing the line work.

While I wouldn’t call this a “filler” issue, it definitely feels like it mostly exists to get all of the characters ready for next month’s main event.

Part of me wants to peer into the future and see what people say of this run in a few years. Its such a masterpiece, it almost hurts. Its an amazing story, when you take it all together as one huge long arc, which is just what it is. And really, its the story of Bucky. He's the one constant in this series, first the memories of him, and what he might have become, and then Steve trying to find him, and Bucky finding himself, and then Steve dying and Bucky having to deal with his feelings of loss and anger of Steve's death, and eventually honoring Steve by wearing his costume and upholding the name.

Its Bucky's story, and I love that. It works so well as a long run, a single consolidated story.

Can't wait for the new issue, and the next three parts just to see how this storyline finally ends.

I came in with issue 25 and went back and picked up everything else. This has been nothing short of an amazing series. Really the pieces have been put in place long before we go to this end of the playing field and it'll be interesting to see what else plays out once this storyarc ends.

I value this run as highly as Ennis' Punisher and Priest's Black Panther. It's one of Marvel's finest.

ReggieWhiteJr is on a distinguished road
When I saw the cover, I thought for sure that I knew who the other Cap was. I flipped through it at my shop to find out I was wrong.

I still haven't picked up a single issue of Bru's run on Cap, but I plan to get the trade that begins from CA #25. I guess that would be a good jump on point.

This was fantastic, as always. Loved the Bucky-Falcon parts.

You could always pick up the Omnibus that collects #1 - #25

Wonderful suggestion. I picked up that Omnibus at Amazon a while back and it just came in a few days ago. I've only had time to leaf through a few issues, but I can't believe that I never gave this a chance. It's great.
