UNCANNY X-MEN #499 ADVANCE REVIEW

Review by: Blake M. Petit Blake@comixtreme.com
Quick Rating: Average
Title: X-Men Divided Part Four
Rating: T+

Battles in San Francisco and Russia

Writer: Ed Brubaker
Art: Mike Choi & Ben Oliver
Colors: Sonia Oback & Jason Keith
Letters: Cory Petit
Editor: Nick Lowe
Cover Art: Billy Tan
Publisher: Marvel comics

Not much to say about this one, so it’ll be quick: two fights. One in San Francisco, one in Russia. Cyclops and Emma try to free Angel from the mental manipulations of Mastermind, while Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Colossus throw down with Omega Red.

Basically, the whole book cuts back and forth between these two fight scenes, neither of which is really engaging me at this point. The whole San Francisco storyline leaves me completely cold, and with the apparent news leak that the team will be making their new base there, my enthusiasm has been dulled even more. The Omega Red bit is okay, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before.

Choi and Oback share the art chores here with Ben Oliver and Jason Keith, and the book works well. I couldn’t tell when we shifted from one art team to the other, and the whole package looks good.

Overall, this book has really let me down since Messiah Complex. Coming off one of the strongest X-Men storylines in years, I just don’t care for the direction the flagship title of the line is taking. Hopefully next issue’s 500th issue extravaganza will change my mind.

I'm glad the X-Men are setting up in San Francisco. It will be a nice change of atmosphere from NY (where nearly everything else is)...as long as they focus on the differences in people and how they view mutants.

I don't think so -- Scott and Emma weren't aware, but I thought it was clear enough to the reader.

If I was wrong, I apologize.

Mastermind's been shown on panel several times IIRC.

I think it would be a spoiler if Cyclops or Emma Frost were reading this.

Emma: "Scott, this magnificent writer/specimen of a man named Blake Petit said that its Mastermind doing this."

Scott: "No ****. THE Blake Petit??"

I so want to see that scene in a comic book some day.

Yea she hasn't been named proper in the book, just alluded to...

You might want to correct that..

she was indeed called Martinique last issue, so it's not a spoiler.

These post-MC issues just feel like filler to the 500th issue. It's been an ok story, nothing more nothing less. I just usually like my filler to be limited to one or two issue arcs.

So after putting up with a few issues of those filthy, stinking hippies I'm naturally looking forward to being rid of them, right?

Obviously.

But instead the X-Men are settling there? No thanks! I can't stand a monthly dose of the LSD-Men.

Filthy hippies.....

Just because they're setting up shop in SF doesn't mean that every issue is going to have 'hippies' remember that this is an illusion that's being created.

So take it with a grain of salt and enjoy what you can

Yeah, that's true. On the other hand it is San Francisco. So there are bound to be some hippies.

Filthy hippies....
