TEEN TITANS YEAR ONE #5 REVIEW

Reviewer: Ryan Broussard ryanb1114@yahoo.com
Quick Rating:Great and Funny
Title:Young Heroes in Love

Wonder Girl has her first date with Speedy…

Writers: Amy Wolfram
Pencils Karl Kerschl
Inker Serge Lapointe
Colors John Rauch
Letters: Nick J. Napolitano
Cover Art: Karl Kerschl and Stephane Peru
Publisher: DC Comics

I cannot stress enough how much I truly enjoy this mini-series. Each issue I find incredibly light hearted, fun, and entertaining. This issue was no different than past ones.

Here Wonder Girl goes on her first date with Speedy. Speedy is aloud to take Green Arrow’s car to impress his date, only to find that it gets stolen by a car thief, Ding Dong Daddio. Like I said, fun and light hearted. Speedy and Wonder Girl go to seek Daddio and the Arrow car out. Meanwhile, Kid Flash and Aqualad stay at home and kill time.

I know it seems like not terribly much happens in this issue. But much like the past issues this issue is self contained and very entertaining. Amy Wolfram really knows how to write these characters as kids and even more so fun kids. She knows how to really bring out the youth in the story. Also she has a very good sense of humor and that carries through this book. I smile when I read these issues. I especially love the way she writes Kid Flash and Aqualad. They had the fewest scenes here, but they made me laugh.

I just cannot say enough about Karl Kerschl. I feel his style is what comics need more of now of days. His art matches perfect, just perfect, with the story. It is young, fresh, and light hearted. The images also add to the humor factor as well. Best example I can think of is the scene with the turtle in this issue. Hilarious scene that was made even better by the brilliant work by Kerschl. That turtle just makes me laugh. His work is gorgeous, detailed, and just a breath of fresh air. I say put this guy on a main DC book. Just look at how he draws Batman and Green Arrow in this issue and you can see the potential.

Overall this is an amazing book that I feel is being overlooked.

What Works:

The self contained issues, the characterization, the humor, and the brilliant art work

What doesn’t:
I wish this issue had more of Robin in it and more of the team together.

Recommended for:
Old school Titans fans, Younger audience, and anyone looking to smile.

I've got all five actually. I really enjoy this book. Much more entertaining than Titans.

For anyone who likes this, I'd recommend Tiny Titans. It's more of a Sunday Comic style, but it's got so many Titans jokes tied into the comedy. That's how I got my girl to start reading comics.

thats great that you read this, but I don't feel TTT because I feel it is a little too slapstick. The art and up in the air jokes and story are just a little to on the kid side for me. This book and its art sits right there on the fence of being "kiddie" and yet as an adult I appreciate the art and story telling
