IMMORTAL IRON FIST #17 ADVANCE REVIEW

Review by: Blake M. Petit Blake@comixtreme.com
Quick Rating: Average
Title: The Mortal Iron Fist Chapter One
Rating: T+

On his birthday, Danny Rand tries to escape his destiny.

Writer: Duane Swierczynski
Art: Travel Foreman & Russ Heath
Colors: Matt Milla
Letters: Artmonkey’s Dave & Natalie
Editor: Warren Simons
Cover Art: Travel Foreman
Publisher: Marvel Comics

In all of history, only one Iron Fist has ever lived to be older than 33. Now, on his 33rd birthday, Danny Rand has to figure out how to escape destiny.

Danny’s stuff, to be frank, is dull. He wanders around, he has morbid conversations with his friends, he broods over his relationship with Misty Knight, we all fall asleep. Far more interesting are the flashback scenes to 1878, where we see one of the Iron Fists of the past as he tries to make his way through a hostile American west. Here we perhaps get a hint of why all the past Iron Fists have died so young, and if it’s an enemy he can fight, it seems that Danny may have more of a chance.

Travel Foreman’s artwork is just okay. Russ Heath’s is really quite good – I’d love to see him do more western work on a book like Jonah Hex or The Lone Ranger. His style is perfectly suited to this time period, and he was a good choice to encapsulate that part of Iron Fist’s history.

But taken as a whole, this issue really doesn’t impress. Fans of the Brubaker/Fraction run will find the new writer lacking much of the spark that made the book a favorite during their run.

I dont care if brubaker and fraction are gone, im totally into Danny Rand and the whole mythos and history of the iron fist. The art is kind of step backward compared to the greatness that Aja was putting out but its solid anyway. Foreman isnt clean with his shadows and lights like Aja was. Sometimes characters are way darker or lighter for no reason

This was wasn't actually that bad. I like how the story automatically went into the action (no prolonged build-up for the antagonist to show his face). The flashback art was fine for what it is. However the main story art really hits in some places (not as great as Aja, but who is), but is too inconsistent (some dark heavy shading/lines). Not sure if that was due to the way the art was done or reproduced. The coloring was good. Although Brubaker and Fraction had an excellent run, I encourage fans of the book to keep on board at least through this arc to see if the new creative team is up the challenging task of keeping Iron Fist awesome.
