SUPERMAN #678 REVIEW

Review by: Blake M. Petit Blake@comixtreme.com
Quick Rating: Very Good
Title: Time Lost (The Coming of Atlas Part Two)

The tale of Atlas!

Writer: James Robinson
Pencils: Renato Guedes
Inks: Wilson Magalhaes
Colors: Hi-Fi
Letters: John J. Hill
Editor: Matt Idelson
Cover Art: Alex Ross
Publisher: DC Comics

This issue, as Superman faces down Atlas on the streets of Metropolis, Robinson plunges us back to his origin. What we seem to have here is the classic conquering barbarian, someone whose menace isn’t necessarily due to a malicious nature, but because in his world might was the way of things. He seeks battle, he seeks to prove himself against the strongest champion this new world has to offer. He’s a more complex character than he appears to be.

Robinson seeds the story with some other things as well – Lois, for instance, isn’t as wild about Krypto’s return as Clark is. There’s something going on there, something odd, that makes me highly curious.

The artwork is really great here. Guedes is becoming one of my favorite artists, and the Jack Kirby homage he does here during Atlas’s origin sequence is spot-on perfect. The strange, muted color palette in use this issue (particularly noticeable when you look at Superman’s costume colors) gives the book a different feel, making it seem like it’s part of an older, darker world, which fits in with Atlas just fine.

Now that some tidbits about the upcoming crossover of the Superman titles have been revealed, it’s easier to see where this title is headed. I really can’t wait to see it get there.

I was going to pick this and up at the shop to scope out to see if Robinson improved in his second issue, but the art here was absolutely horrid. Like still claymation or something....the coloring was weird too, especially the color of skin. No way I'm collecting this.

So I take it you don't like Pete Woods art either?

Isn't he the Amazons Attack guy? If so, no I'm not a fan. But what the heck does he have to do with Guedes?
