HACK/SLASH ANNUAL #1 REVIEW
Review by: Blake M. Petit Blake@comixtreme.com
Quick Rating: Very Good Title: Suicide Girls Rating: MR Cassie and the Suicide Girls face a cyberslasher! Writer: Tim Seeley Art: Tim Seeley Colors: Katie DeSousa Letters: Crank! Cover Art: Tim Seeley (Covers A, C & D), Emily Stone (Cover B), Rion Vernon (Cover E) Publisher: Devil’s Due Publishing The Suicide Girls, of course, are a real group, and like he did with various comic book creators in an earlier special, Tim Seeley doesn’t flinch from painting real people as both characters and victims in this story. The culture of the Suicide Girls is one that mixes well with Cassie, though, and while it may not seem as obvious as the crossovers with Chucky and Bump, the combination of the two properties works very well here. Seeley does his own artwork here, and it makes me wish he did it more often. Regular artist Emily Stone is great, but the combination of Seeley’s pencils and DeSousa’s colors make for one of the most vivid (no pun intended) books I’ve seen from Devil’s Due in some time. Fair warning, though: more so than a usual issue of Hack/Slash, this is a comic that earns its Mature Readers stamp, and not just for the gore factor. Cassie’s photo shoot is pretty explicit, and if that’s not your thing, you should probably stay clear. Of course, if it’s not your thing, I’m not sure why you’d be reading this comic in the first place. IMO Hack/Slash is one of the best books out there at the moment and I was very much looking forward to this annual.
Needless to say I was very impressed as always with Seeley's work. Though I'm not entirely sure the back pages were needed in such detail (?) I think you could of had the same effect and gotten the idea of what she had to do without going that far. |
