2 IN 1 SHOWCASE EPISODE 79: SHOWCASE TANGENT 4-SAN DIEGO SO FAR

Episode 79: Showcase Tangent 4-San Diego So Far
by Chase Bouzigard and Blake Petit

Once again, the boys come at us with a special Showcase Tangent, in which any and all topics are up for grabs! The guys start by picking apart all of the news that's come from this year's San Diego Comicon so far! Mark Waid writing The Incredibles? Disney is making a Tron 2? Johns, Robinson and Gates on Superman: New Krypton? Will Blake ever see sunlight again after DC Universe Online is released? Plus, even more thoughts on The Dark Knight, Chase reviews The X-Files: I Want to Believe, and the guys make a BIG announcement about the next Showcase special project! Then, there's plenty of time to answer your e-mails! Chase doesn't have a pick this week, but Blake tells you about the coolness of Archie #587. That's right. Archie. Want your own comments to be read on a future episode? E-mail us with your comments, "Ask Chase Anything" questions, or anything else at Showcase@comixtreme.com!

Hey guys, thanks for answering my questions. For the record I've been sending in so many questions to make up for my late getting into this podcast...but don't worry, from this point on I'm going to just save my e-mails for specific shows.

Apologies if this is the wrong place to state this, but I just listened to the Quarter Bin episode of "2 in 1 Showcase" and I wanted to respond to the discussion of "Captain Confederacy" therein.

You guys really should have stopped and wondered why a mainstream American media company such as Marvel Comics would publish under its Epic imprint a comic that was as racist as you took the comic to be as late as the early 1990s, decades after introducing characters like Black Panther. Why would the editor of such a major company suddenly decide: "gee, let's publish a comic book glorifying Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan." If that was the kind of company they were, their "Civil War" crossover would have taken place during the actual Civil War.

The comic book was not a racist tract. The hero of the comic book was a white "Captain America" type who is created as a propaganda figure of an Apartheid-like state, but who rebels against his government to fight for racial equality. The hero of the comic is a white guy in love with a black woman who has a baby with that black woman, and they fight together against the Confederacy. Hardly the stuff a white supremacist would write.

The author of the comic was himself threatened with having his house burned down in real life by the KKK when he was a child. He wrote the comic specifically as an anti-racist morality tale. See this Comicon.com interview:

http://www.comicon.com/cgi-bin/ultim...;f=36;t=004840

I realize you guys may have rushed through your reading of this comic, but I thought a gentle correction might be in order, given you guys stated on your podcast that Marvel published a horribly racist comic, and you may have influenced people to judge this comic book unfairly. As you'll see in the interview linked above, you are not the first to have judged the book by its cover and slammed it in the media.

To be fair, blob, I didn't read the book at all. I selected it just to see what Chase's reaction would be. I pretty much assumed it would be a satire along the lines of what you're saying.

I'm not seriously worked up over this, despite the appearance the length of my post above may have created. Just wanted to explain what I found when I went to investigate this comic book that sounded insane from the description on the show.

I'm off to read a Kurt Buskie comic....

Good Points, I did read the book, However I had no Frame of refrence, just the book, and that is what I took away from it.

The snow worked for me in the X-Files...but then I'm Canadian.

But yeah it was a good X-Files episode.
