AMBUSH BUG: YEAR NONE #2 REVIEW

Review by: Blake M. Petit Blake@comixtreme.com
Quick Rating: Good
Title: Five Million Elvis Impersonators Can’t Be Wrong!

Amber Butane tries to save the world!

Plot and Pencils: Keith Giffen
Script: Robert Loren Fleming
Inks: Al Milgrom
Colors: Guy Major
Letters: Pat Brosseau
Editor: Jann Jones
Cover Art: Keith Giffen
Publisher: DC Comics

The lunacy of Ambush Bug continues this issue! As Ambush Bug pursues his dream of becoming a Space Ranger, Cheeks becomes an OMAC and the Bug winds up on the planet Shavoth, where they’re used to heroes coming in the form of the Flash. Shavoth is in danger from the Mauve Lantern, herald of the world redecorator called Mr. Nebula. Meanwhile, Go-Go Chex’s master plan continues.

That may be the most singularly confusing synopsis I’ve ever written, but if you’ve read Ambush Bug’s comics before, you know just how accurate that is. The tales of Irwin Schwab are always totally insane, bouncing from vignette to vignette with only the thinnest semblance of plot ushering them along. The story here briefly touches on some of the stories that led into Infinite Crisis, including the OMACs, the Spectre’s rampage, and the death of the Blue Beetle. Mostly, though, it’s a way to parody the Green Lanterns, Galactus, furries and about a trillion other things. It’s screwy, it’s funny, and it’s highly satisfying.

Giffen and Milgrom’s artwork hasn’t lost a step in the years since Ambush Bug’s last comic. If anything, it looks even better, due in no small part to more modern coloring techniques from Guy Major. The result is a book that looks distinctly contemporary without losing any of the old-fashioned kitch and charm that makes it so much fun to read.

Admittedly, this is a book where you kind of have to be in on the joke. I can’t really imagine anyone who hasn’t read Ambush Bug before picking up this issue and getting right into it – it’s simply too crazy for someone who doesn’t know what to expect. For those of us who are longtime fans, though, it’s well worth the read.

What a fun issue.
