ULTIMATE X-MEN/ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL #1 ADVANCE REVIEW

Review by: Blake M. Petit Blake@comixtreme.com
Quick Rating: Good
Rating: T+

The X-Men of the future hunt the Fantastic Four of today!

Writers: Aron E. Coleite & Joe Pkaski
Pencils: Dan Panosian & Mark Brooks
Inks: Danny Miki & Troy Hubbs
Colors: John Rauch & Antonio Cabela
Letters: Albert Deschesne
Editor: Lauren Sankovitch
Cover Art: Brandon Peterson
Publisher: Marvel Comics

In the future, with mutantkind on the run, the remnants of the X-Men make a desperate play to go back in time and stop the man responsible for the world they live in: Reed Richards. As the future X-Men attack, the current FF seeks out the current X-Men for help.

Okay, I’m going to get the nerdiest complaint out of the way first: is there any reason this issue couldn’t have been Ultimate X-Men Annual and part two Ultimate Fantastic Four Annual, or vice-versa? I mean, doing it this way is just playing havoc with comic book databases worldwide!

Ahem. Okay, with that out of the way, the story’s pretty good. Each of the future X-Men has a neat little twist that makes them a bit more interesting and gives them a bit more story, even if that story is implied (such as with Kitty) rather than expressed clearly. This depiction of the young Reed is interesting as well, particularly considering the level of knowledge he has about his alternate selves.

The two pencilers on this book, Dan Panosian and Mark Brooks, are both good, solid artists. However, their styles are somewhat different from one another. I wouldn’t have had a problem with either of them doing the book solo, or pairing up with another penciler whose style is close to their own, but their styles are really too distinct. I don’t mind multiple artists on a comic. I just don’t like noticing the shift, and that’s what happened here.

It’s an interesting enough issue, and a nice start to this two-part story.

So... is this a one-shot, or a two-issue arc? Looks very interesting.

A two-issue arc made up of two one-shots: Ultimate X-Men/FF Annual #1, and Ultimate FF/X-Men Annual #1.

They've done something like this previously as well, with two related one-shots.
